Would the latest Haredi thugs to attack soldiers really have refrained if they knew he studied Torah?

The mother of the soldier who was attacked the other day says he became ultra-Orthodox just 5  years ago:

"If they would've known that he went to study Torah, I'm sure they wouldn’t have attacked him. They caused damage to all of us," said D., the mother of the haredi soldier attacked Tuesday by fellow ultra-orthodox because he was in IDF uniform.

She recalled Tuesday's events and said: "the haredim attacked him and threw garbage at him." What has not been known is that her son became a haredi only five years ago and that his decision to serve in the IDF was a remnant of his past life.

"My son is exhausted, he is traumatized. His brothers attacked him, and they should to rot in jail."

Yes, they should. But would they really have avoided assaulting him if they knew he was en route from Torah study? I don't think so. There's plenty of Haredi soldiers working on these kind of studies, and while their yeshivas are undoubtably rational ones, there's others that aren't, and from there could come some of the most extreme screwballs.

That said, I again reiterate my argument that ultra-Orthodox lifestyle is just not workable in the long term, thanks to what these "sikrikim" are doing, and maybe the soldiers who've experienced this kind of terrible harassment should try simpler approaches to religion.

The internal security minister has called the thugs just what they are: criminals.
