Another auto-jihadist strikes in Long Island, New York
June 20, 2006 -- A boozed-up rich kid tossed from a tony Long Island bar jumped behind the wheel of his Jaguar and sneered, "I'll kill you all," before plowing into a crowd of horrified bystanders, critically injuring two, police said yesterday. The lawyer is a disgrace, by claiming his client is a "victim". The cretin, as you can see here, is certainly no pauper, but rather, a spoiled rich kid with plenty of money and a fancy Jaguar to boot. Likewise, his family is rich too, and we should hope that the prosecution will make sure that their money cannot obstruct justice.
"He just tore around the corner and came right at the crowd - bodies were flying everywhere," said Matthew Hurwitz, 22, of Glen Cove, who was clipped by the car in a coldblooded replay of an infamous rampage involving pedal-pushing publicist Lizzie Grubman. "It was like a movie, but the people didn't get up afterwards. There were people lying all over the place, laying in blood. It was awful."
The carnage erupted early Sunday morning outside the Soundview Bar at Glen Cove's town golf course, where soused suspect Sayed Khaled El-Waraky, 19, of posh Vienna, Va., had been rowdily celebrating a fellow wealthy frat brother's birthday, cops and witnesses said.
"He [El-Waraky] was acting really drunk . . . bumping into other people, being abrasive and causing trouble with the staff," said Glen Cove Detective Sgt. Thomas Fitzpatrick. Then "he pushed a girl, and that was enough."
Bouncer Sean Basdavanos, 22, hauled the troublemaker outside, followed by a crowd of people eager to see him booted, witnesses said.
As they got up to his black 2005 Jaguar S-Type - his high-school graduation gift - a brawl ensued, police said.
An incensed El-Waraky, a part-time student at American University in Washington, D.C., finally got behind the wheel of his flashy car with chrome wheels and started to head toward the exit as about three dozen people watched, cops said.
"Just when everyone thought it was over, the car came speeding [back] around the corner, the pedal to the floor, and he just mowed them all down," Fitzpatrick said.
The underage perp fled, his car windshield and hood bashed in. But he was nabbed a few minutes later.
El-Waraky, an Egyptian national, faces charges including depraved indifference for human life. He could land 25 years to life if convicted. He was being held without bail yesterday.
Hurwitz's buddy, Basdavanos, a former Glen Cove HS football star, was left critically wounded in the horror.
He was on a respirator at North Shore University Hospital, where his mom, Maureen, said he was "in pretty bad shape, but he's getting better."
Also critically hurt in the horror was Matthew Granger, 23, of Water Mill. He suffered multiple skull fractures, authorities said.
El-Waraky's lawyer, Ryan Brownyard, said his client had one prior arrest, for DWI, in 2003 in D.C. He claimed outside court that his client was a victim.
"My client sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a mob of people," Brownyard said.
El-Waraky's father, reached at a multimillion-dollar family home in Vienna, Va., said he had "no idea what happened."
