French police are being attacked by Muslim neighborhoods
If Sarkozy or someone else in the government with sense had control of the defense ministry, all this would've been easier to deal with. But because he/they don't, and Chirac is undermining the ability to enforce the law more seriously, this is the result. From the UK Telegraph (via Hot Air):

Police representatives told the newspaper Le Figaro that the “taboo” of attacking officers on patrol has been broken.Message to Chirac and Villepin: please kindly retire and allow the army to be sent in to deal with these gutter slimebuckets. And if Sarkozy can deal with it, then please let him be able to!
Instead, officers – especially those patrolling in pairs or small groups – faced attacks as soon as they tried to arrest locals.

You no longer see two or three youths confronting police, you see whole tower blocks emptying into the streets to set their ‘comrades’ free when they are arrested.”
