French leftists move to the right
PARIS -- One by one, several French writers and intellectuals are making the startling confessions. After decades as committed leftists, they are defecting to the right _ many saying they've lost faith in Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal.Did the carbeques serve as a wakeup call for them? It's very good that now, they're starting to realize that Royal is simply not fit for the job.
With just 10 weeks to go until the election's first round, Royal still has no platform. She has made gaffes on international affairs, and her popularity with intellectuals and ordinary voters alike has slipped, leaving conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy at the top of the polls.
Sarkozy on the other hand made an excellent move by offering support for Charlie Hebdo in the lawsuit filed against them for publishing the Mohammed cartoons last year (via The Jawa Report). He's got a good point, that satire is something the French are good at, and should continue with their talent.
