Will Britain appease Iran?
Melanie Phillips discusses the serious case of 15 British naval members, including one woman, who were taken prisoner by Iran, and so far, there's been no sign of their release yet. And most troubling is the possiblity that Britain could end up appeasing Iran in some way or other.
It was said that Faye Turney, the female navy official, was going to be released, but as of now, that does not look to be happening. Now, it's been reported that Britain is going to turn to the UN about this. But as Phillips notes, there doesn't seem to be any urgency in dealing with this, nor any anger, and while I have no doubt that the relatives of the navy officers in danger are outraged at their imprisonment, I haven't seen any news articles so far to tell us that. Why are the press remaining silent on that part?
So yes, the lack of serious outrage on the case is very disturbing.
Update: now the news is that the sailors may be put on trial.
Update 2: the United Nations refuses to call for the sailors' release (via Hot Air). And Nancy Pelosi refuses to do so either. Yes, this is a very troubling case indeed.
Update 3: an Iranian opposition group claims that the capture was planned in retaliation for the sanctions imposed upon them. They don't offer clear evidence to support that though.
Update 4: Dubya has finally come and called for the sailors' release.
Update 5: it looks like now, the sailors have been freed.
