A terrorist disguised as Bin Laden?
For all we know, Osama bin Laden may be dead, but it seems as though some Islamofascists would rather we think otherwise. As first told in this Blotter entry (via Hot Air):
Others on the subject include The Jawa Report, Sister Toldjah, Wizbang, Ace of Spades HQ, Newsbusters, The Mudville Gazette, Church and State, Leaning Straight Up, James Hooker's War, Michelle Malkin, Neocon News, Bill Hobbs, A Blog for All, Blogs of War, The Detroit Times, Flopping Aces.
U.S. authorities now say they have a transcript which they say is aimed at potential suicide bombers who he urges to carry out missions against the West. And that's not all. There's also a videotape in which he criticized the Dems in Congress for not stopping the war. But the most curious thing is how the man in the recording may be an imposter. As told on Political Radar, this is what "bin Laden" said:
“People of America: the world is following your news in regards to your invasion of Iraq, for people have recently come to know that, after several years of tragedies of this war, the vast majority of you want it stopped. Thus, you elected the Democratic Party for this purpose, but the Democrats haven’t made a move worth mentioning. On the contrary, they continue to agree to the spending of tens of billions to continue the killing and war there.”Whoa, did I see that correctly? Somehow, that just doesn't sound like an Islamist to use talk like "global warming" even if that's something they want to do themselves, and not in the "natural" way. So is this an imposter of some sort? (For the full transcript, here's NBC's PDF.) Well, the subject has already made plenty of headlines in the blogverse already, as everybody wonders. For example, as Michael Ledeen at the Corner (Hat tip: Stop the ACLU) says:
The rambling transcript also mentions French President Sarkozy, which suggests the tape was made after Sarkozy’s election in May.
According to the transcript, bin Laden says there are two ways to end the war:
“The first is from our side, and it is to continue to escalate the killing and fighting against you.”
The second is to do away with the American democratic system of government. “It has now become clear to you and the entire world the impotence of the democratic system and how it plays with the interests of the peoples and their blood by sacrificing soldiers and populations to achieve the interests of the major corporations.”
Bin Laden goes on to call Noam Chomsky “among one of the most capable of those from your own side,” and mentions global warming and “the Kyoto accord.”
First, the beard. Robert Spencer finds that Muslims are permitted to dye their hair when going into battle, to confound the enemy into thinking they are young. He links that to the call for the infidels to convert, by now a staple in al Qaeda's propaganda. It seems to be a tradition: Islam or the sword.I wonder if that's why Allahpundit likes to use that Bert picture at times on Hot Air? Because, as he may have rightfully wondered at times, almost any bin Laden act we see today is by actors wearing ridiculous costumes?
The beard looks odd to me. It seems curly or frizzy, for one thing, not at all like the stringy beard of yore. In fact "Osama" looks like a muppet, not like the real thing. Rush had a lot of fun today comparing the video to the time when the terrorists claimed to have captured an American soldier, and provided a photo, which turned out to be a G.I. Joe doll.
Third, is it really Osama? As you know, I was reliably told something like two years ago that Osama had died. Nothing in this speech sounds at all like the “old” OBL. That man knew how to give a stemwinder, he used elegant language, his threats were blood-curdling, his calls to the faithful inspiring. This man talks like, well, a high school dropout. In fact it reads like an “Onion” spoof. And the sound is bizarre, at least on my IBM desktop. It sounds almost as if there was enough garble in it to make it difficult to match with voice prints of the “real” guy. I’m not convinced. As I said, I've got a feeling this could be an imposter. Now, the question is, where did this tape come from, and where was it filmed? Read more of the links I'll provide below to see what everybody else has to say too. And for the record, it seems that there's another, potentially fake, videotape that's going to come out soon (more on that here). Be ready to examine it carefully when available, because, as Atlas Shrugs says, we need to take the threats it contains seriously.
