Two Haredi crackpots convicted for their violent felonies that embarrassed Judaism
Yishai Schlissel, who killed a participant in Jerusalem’s pride parade, was convicted on Tuesday of murder, six counts of attempted murder and one count of causing extreme bodily harm. They're absolutely correct on this. Even the police officers who turned him away when he first tried to infiltrate may have to be held accountable for not searching him for weapons.
The Jerusalem District Court’s three-judge panel of Nava Ben-Or, Refael Yacobi and Arnon Darel, wrote that Schlissel, “in a dark and cruel act, has extinguished the light of her [Shira Banki’s] life,” ending “her dreams and hopes.”
The stabbings garnered across-the-board condemnations, including from Orthodox figures, and drew international attention due to the ferocity of the attack.
Schlissel, who was previously imprisoned for 10 years for stabbing three people at the 2005 Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade, was arrested during the stabbing rampage, just weeks after being released from jail.
[...] Police intelligence “was not used wisely... the writing was on the wall, but those responsible to stop it did not read it,” the court concluded regarding the police’s conduct.
The court also made a plea to the Knesset to pass a law creating controls that the state can place on certain violent convicts even after they are released.
It stated that unlike with sexual offenders, where their release even after the end of their prison time can have restrictions about being under supervision and in a rehabilitation program, there is no legal power to impose such measures on non-sexual but extremely violent offenders like Schlissel – a situation that must be fixed.
On a related note, here's something eyebrow raising that occurred during the monster's original conviction:
During his prison sentence for the 2005 stabbing attacks, Schlissel divorced his wife.Surely the most bizarre, stupefying thing about the creep is that he clearly wants to isolate himself, and wants to be in prison. It's almost similar to how some jihadists throw away their own lives. But given the barbaric nature he went by, that's why he deserves no sympathy whatsoever, and deserves to end his life all alone in prison for the damage he's caused. Practically everyone in the Haredi community's turned their backs on him, and should.
Another conviction was that of Yosef Haim Ben-David, who led the murder of an Arabic boy 2 years ago and humiliated the religion he supposedly upheld:
Rejecting an 11th-hour insanity plea filed in December, the Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday convicted Yosef Haim Ben-David of being the ringleader in the July 2, 2014 murder of Muhammad Abu Khdeir. One of the culprits is just 17 years old, and now, he's going to serve life imprisonment. He threw his life away, much like Schlissel did, for the sake of a distorted viewpoint on Judaism, and did the Jewish victims of jihadism a grave disfavor.
Ruling on Ben-David’s mental state, the court wrote that, “At the time of the perpetrating of the crime, the accused was not psychotic, understood his actions well, was culpable for his actions, in control of them, had no disturbance in judging reality, and had the ability to prevent commission of the crimes.”
In February, the court sentenced two minors who had already been convicted of the murder – one to life in prison, and the other to 21 years in prison.
Abu Khdeir, a 16-year-old from Shuafat in east Jerusalem, was abducted while waiting to enter a mosque and brutally murdered by being tortured and burned alive.
News of the slaying led to rioting in east Jerusalem and the rest of the country.
Ben-David and the two Jewish minors burned Abu Khdeir to death as a nationalist revenge murder following the murder of Jewish teenagers Gilad Shaer, Naftali Fraenkel and Eyal Yifrach in June 2014.
