British Haredi girls' school censors content in textbooks out of moral panic on sexual subjects
A Haredi seminary for girls in the United Kingdom has caused outrage after it redacted references to homosexuality and abortions from its textbooks, and censored imagery of women on the grounds that it was merely "shielding the girls from sexual content."They even removed content featuring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire dancing, which just shows how they don't have the courage to explain how joy is expressed in western culture with dance. They also obviously don't have the talent to teach why homosexuality is abnormal, even though censoring it altogether is only bound to lead to more courtesy of their gender segregation beliefs. If they're going to mutilate the textbooks, they should receive a fine from the education ministry.
In Israel, Haredi textbooks are produced independently and their content is therefore supervised from the outset to meet the sector's standards. In England, however, the same textbooks are used across the country's school system, without deference to sectorial preferences.
British media, consequently, raised concern over the censorship on display in textbooks used by the Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls' School in Stamford Hill, Hackney. Entire paragraphs were erased from textbooks with a black marker, according to reports and photos disseminated online, while some photos were covered up and others women were "dressed" using the same black marker.
Of course, it's entirely possible Muslim madrassas in the UK do the same and are allowed to get away with it, or, they're allowed to use entirely different textbooks no matter the common approach in the rest of the country, so the article may not have the impact it could as a result. Though it is galling nevertheless.
