Left-wing Zionist Union breaks up with Tzipi Livni
A political drama rattled the Left on Tuesday when Labor leader Avi Gabbay abruptly announced he was ending his partnership with Hatnuah head Tzipi Livni, effectively dissolving the Zionist Union faction.Like running alone in the election? Well good luck with that. The Meretz party might want her, but few others do, because she's just not very responsible, and became more and more of a joke as she went along, like demanding to be an opposition leader out of entitlement mentality. Not that it's done them much good in polling:
The two parties partnered ahead of the 2015 elections, winning 24 Knesset seats. Polls conducted since early elections were called for April 9, however, projected an abysmal result for the political alliance giving it, at best, eight mandates – a third of its power.
Gabby announced his decision in a press conference in Tel Aviv shortly before noon. The announcement clearly blindsided Livni, whose stunned expression was captured on camera.
Leaving the room immediately after Gabbay spoke, she said, "I won't comment at this time, I have some decisions to make."
Earlier Tuesday, Labor insiders blamed Gabbay for Zionist Union's abysmal performance in the polls.Well, it's been a long time coming, so maybe it's for the best they implode by that much, after all the trouble they caused in the past, which they haven't shown much remorse for. Here's more on just how hard the fallout with Livni was:
"Labor has never been in such a difficult state in the polls and it has never experienced such helplessness," a senior lawmaker in the party now preparing to hold primaries on Feb. 12., said.
"It's a deadly tsunami," another Labor insider said. "The Zionist Union now has 24 lawmakers, 19 of them are Labor members. We are projected to lose two-thirds of our power. It's a real massacre. There will be a vicious competition on the primaries for the top 10 [positions] in the party."
Labor Party leader Avi Gabbay shocked the MKs of the Zionist Union faction on Tuesday, when he announced that he was breaking up the partnership with the Hatnua Party of Tzipi Livni.Oh, what a classic. They have a disagreement, so make the first accusation chauvanism. Maybe some women did find Gabbay's handling insulting, but Livni's still lacking in talent, and I doubt many will feel sorry if she winds up outside the Knesset in the end. In fact, as the following tells, her platform's still very bad:
Gabbay spoke with Livni sitting next to him in a stern face. It was clear that neither she nor any of the MKs were told of the decision in advance. He said he accepted the request of former Labor leader Isaac Herzog in July to keep the partnership going and faced massive criticism inside Labor when he accepted Livni's demand to be opposition leader, but now decided to go in a different direction.
"I hoped and believed this partnership would bring about our blossoming, a real connection and we would complement each other, but the public is smart, saw this is the situation and distanced itself from us," Gabbay said. "I still believe in partnering and connecting into one big camp to bring about change but successful partnerships require friendship, keeping agreements and loyalty to our path. This is not happening in this partnership."
Gabbay then wished Livni well, as the MKs in the faction let out calls of "whoa."
After the media left, Gabbay said to Labor MKs: “I was constantly eating shit because of Livni. She didn’t have a good word to say about me. She made an ultimatum here in front of the cameras that she’d quit if she’s not made opposition leader, so don’t talk to me about manners.”
“It is good that the doubts have been dispelled and one can focus on the important national challenge that we are facing, all those who truly believe in the way - a revolution in the coming elections,” Livni wrote on Twitter after the meeting.
Livni called a press conference afterward in which she accused Gabbay of chauvenism and said she had gotten countless calls and texts of women offended by the way Gabbay had treated her. She also revealed that she had prevented a split in Labor before Sunday’s deadline.
A source close to Livni said Gabbay’s press conference preempted what would have been a fight about the Zionist Union’s campaign strategy. The source said Gabbay demanded that the campaign be all about praising him and not at all about separating from the Palestinians. Here we go again with the segregation propaganda, which is not one bit helpful. That's why, as dreadful as Gabbay is, she's even worse. There most certainly is a good reason why most shouldn't want to do business with her. She was the ultimate opportunist years ago, and that hasn't changed much now either.
The source said without Labor, it would now be easier to bring about a bloc led by former IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz. Livni vowed to bring about a bloc that could defeat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“This is the time to look forward and bring about the political upheaval we need in order to separate from the Palestinians and keep Israel Jewish and democratic,” she said.
