France's government can't stand Italy's meeting with and backing the Yellow Vests
France’s foreign ministry has reacted with anger after Italy’s populist deputy prime minister Luigi Di Maio met with French Yellow Vests, calling the gathering an “unacceptable provocation.”Them's fightin' words. But Macron's so unwilling to admit failure, he had the ambassador recalled:
Di Maio, whose anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) party governs Italy in coalition with the right-populist League, met with Yellow Vest leader Christophe Chalençon as well as candidates for European Parliament from the anti-government movement on Tuesday.
The deputy prime minister shared a photograph on Instagram of the encounter, writing,
“Today with Alessandro Di Battista [fellow M5S politician], we made a trip to France and we met the leader of the Yellow Vests Cristophe Chalençon and the candidates in the European elections…
“This is the souvenir photo of this beautiful meeting, the first of many, in which we talked about our countries, social rights, environment, and direct democracy.
“The winds of change have crossed the Alps. I repeat. The winds of change have crossed the Alps.”
The meeting comes after Di Maio reached out to the Yellow Vests, writing on his blog in January, “Yellow Vests, do not weaken!”
President Emmanuel Macron’s government has recalled its ambassador from Rome as tensions between France and the Italian populist coalition continue to grow. And all politicians in France who refuse to do their very best to bring about a belated overhaul of the legal system have only failed the French constituents. Italy's government is doing the right thing to offer encouragement to fight on, especially after all the horrific violence inflicted by the French authorities on Yellow Vest protestors that they'd never use on Islamofascists.
The French removed the diplomat from Rome citing “unprecedented attacks by the Italian government” according to a statement from the French Foreign Ministry, Italian newspaper Il Giornale reports.
[...] Luigi Di Maio defended his meeting with the Yellow Vest members saying, “For me that meeting does not represent a provocation towards the current French government, but an important meeting with a political force with which we share many demands, starting from the need for direct democracy to give greater powers to citizens.”
