Netanyahu's now in a position where he can speak out against the court corruption
The same thing is happening with Prime Minister Netanyahu. For 25 years, a campaign of character assassination has been waged against him, the like of which has never been seen in any democracy, and that campaign has turned especially brutal in the last four years. It isn't one particular speech or another, but rather daily and weekly leaks designed to shape public opinion and awaken hatred until it boils over.It most certainly does bear similarities to the Flynn kangaroo court case, but Netanyahu's certainly not taking this lying down. He already spoke out:
This isn't about the public's right to know, but rather the technique that is being exposed in the US right now after the (not final) exoneration of Gen. Michael Flynn. In the US there are checks and balances, and in the end, there is oversight and transparency and it is possible to follow how the leaders of the Obama administration, along with the FBI and the famous columnists, stitched up a respected general and ruined his life, to the point where he admitted to acts he didn't commit.
Again denying all allegations, he condemned the "ludicrous" charges against him. They most definitely are. But if there's one segment of the right-leaning politicians who may not be backing him, it's the Yamina party:
"I'm here with a straight back and my head held high," he said.
Netanyahu, the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history, has long claimed to be the victim of a witchhunt and again suggested the charges were trumped up to stop him continuing in office.
"When you need to take me down, a strong prime minister from the Right, everything is possible," he said.
Netanyahu added a request for the rest of his trial to be broadcast live, unlike the opening session at which the court banned TV cameras.
"I ask for everything to be broadcast live and uncensored so that the public will know," he said.
"The police department and prosecutor's office have joined forces with left-wing newspapers racking up imaginary charges against me. Their goal is the overthrow of a strong prime minister," he said. "Investigations were mishandled from the outset."
"They'd like to see an obedient poodle from the right and I'm not one. I'm not willing to be coddled by the media or uproot settlements, so they're doing everything in their power to get me. I want to reiterate what's going on here: this is a trial against the Right by a bunch of 'Anyone but Bibi' folks. They're trying to frame me."
MK Matan Kahana (Yamina) on Sunday commented on the start of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's trial, saying that the judicial system must undergo significant reform in order to restore public confidence in it.So he admits it looks bad, yet he puts the blame on Netanyahu and won't admit his own party may have screwed the pooch? Yeah, I get it. He's saying Netanyahu has only himself to blame. I'm sorry, but that just doesn't solve anything, and makes it sound more like they're vindictive for being left outside the coalition after all the trouble they caused in the end. That's not being altruistic. If they can't join the fight while leaving their disagreements at the door, they've only explained why they were left out of the coalition.
“A day on which the Israeli Prime Minister sits on the defendant’s bench is a sad day for the State of Israel. The Prime Minister has the presumption of innocence,” Kahana said.
“Our judicial system must undergo significant reform in order to restore public confidence in it. The main culprit in the sickness of the judiciary is Netanyahu, who stopped with his body any reform that was proposed," he added.
Netanyahu's doing the right thing to speak out against this corruption. And we must hope it'll help in the end.
