Terrorism breaks into Canadian parliament
A soldier was recently murdered by a jihadist in Ontario, and today, there was a terrorist infiltration at the Canadian parliament in Ottawa:
Terror came to the heart of the Canadian capital of Ottawa on Sunday as a gunman shot and killed a soldier at point-blank at the national war memorial and then rampaged through the halls of the federal parliament. That a jihadist was able to penetrate a government building is chilling. It's regrettable the police have taken a predictable route by not commenting on the exact identity of the terrorist, because people have a right to know what we're facing. This shows that jihad is a very danger inside Canada.
The attacker was killed in the exchange of fire inside parliament as MPs took cover under tables and Stephen Harper, the prime minister, was evacuated from the building.
Heavily armed police fanned out across central Ottawa amid fears of an Islamic jihadist attack on Canada's heart of government, with a police spokesman confirming that officers were searching for at least one other suspect.
Kevin Vickers, the parliamentary sergeant at arms, was praised by MPs for saving further lives after he shot the gunman outside rooms packed with politicians gathered for weekly caucus meetings.
[...] There were immediate fears that the attack was an act of home-grown jihadist terrorism, although at a press conference, police declined to comment on the identity or motive of the attacker.
Just two days earlier, a recent Muslim convert killed a Canadian soldier and injured another in a deliberate hit-and-run attack in Quebec before being shot to death by police.
Canada raised its domestic terror threat level from low to medium on Tuesday because of "an increase in general chatter from radical Islamist organisations", said Jean-Christophe de Le Rue, a spokesman for the public safety minister.
