Haredi extremists protest their "reps" for supporting reversal of legislation we thought they opposed
Thousands of ultra-Orthodox men took to the streets of Jerusalem Tuesday to protest the new amendment to the conscription law and the haredi parties who voted in favor of it.As you'll notice on this page, some of the protest elements included an effigy shaped like a dog. It gives the sickening feeling they're borrowing a page from the Islamist's playbook, declaring canines an abomination. Truly awful. Is it any wonder their interpretation of Jewish faith isn't considered authentic?
The demonstration was organized by the Jerusalem Faction, an extremist group within the haredi community. Although the amendment was a political victory for the haredim because it postpones mandatory conscription for the next six years, it was nevertheless interpreted by some extremist haredi groups as a threat because it was passed with the help of haredi parties.
The Jerusalem Faction has accused the haredi lawmakers of embracing the very idea of mandatory recruitment for haredim by voting for the amendment, even though the amendment essentially extended the exemption they already enjoyed and limited the government's ability to punish haredi draft dodgers. Some of the demonstrators said the conscription mechanism, however lenient, was on the same scale as anti-Jewish decrees throughout history, and even distributed large posters with the inscription: "The young men of the people of Israel have fallen into the jaws of the military as a result of this conscription punishment, and we are devastated." The protesters said haredim should never join the military, even if they did not engage in regular Torah study.
