Two explosions and a stabbing in the USA
New York is on high alert after an explosion rocked the Chelsea district of Manhattan injuring 29 people, one seriously. On that, the Philadelphia Daily News has more:
Thousands of people were milling around one of Manhattan’s most fashionable areas when the blast ripped through the area shortly after 8.30pm local time.
It is understood to have originated from a device placed in a metal container - a skip or a large builder's toolbox - outside the Associated Blind Housing facility at 135 West 23rd Street.
A second device was found four blocks away on West 27th Street. According to several local news sources it was a pressure cooker attached to a mobile phone by tape with protruding wires.
People living on West 27th Street were instructed to stay away from their windows while the device was investigated.
Police combed, aided by sniffer dogs, combed rubbish bins to ensure there were no other devices.
Earlier in the day there was an explosion at Seaside Park, New Jersey - 83 miles away - which was timed to disrupt a Marine Corps charity run.
The beach and boardwalk at Seaside Park have been evacuated due to an explosion, and police are shutting down Route 35 coming into the island as they continue to investigate. And Canada's Metro News has the following report on the stabbing attack in St. Cloud, Minnesota:
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says a pipe bomb exploded in a trash can in Seaside Park around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, shortly before thousands of runners were due to take part in the Third Annual 5K Semper Five.
No injuries were reported as a result of the blast. The race, which had initially been delayed, has been canceled, and residents have been told to take cover.
A man in a private security uniform stabbed eight people at a Minnesota shopping mall, reportedly mentioning Allah and asking at least one victim if they were Muslim before an off-duty police officer shot and killed him, authorities said.Again, we have an example of a police official who won't admit it's an act of lone-wolf terrorism, plain and simple. These are yet more examples of how jihadism in the USA is getting worse.
All eight victims were treated at a hospital for wounds that weren't life-threatening and all but one was later released, St. Cloud police Chief Blair Anderson said at a news conference. The eighth was admitted, but no other details about that person's condition were released.
The attack happened at around 8 p.m. Saturday at the Crossroads Center in St. Cloud, a city of about 65,000 people 60 miles (95 kilometres ) northwest of Minneapolis.
A man in a security uniform and armed with a knife stabbed people in several locations in the mall, including corridors, businesses and common areas, the chief said. He said an off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction shot and killed the suspect, though he didn't say where that officer serves.
Anderson said the man reportedly made at least one reference to Allah and asked a victim if they were Muslim before attacking them. But he declined to call it an act of terrorism, saying the motive was still unknown.
