Police should investigate and arrest Haredis targeting IDF soldiers
An NGO is calling on police to investigate an alleged incitement network, which seeks to name and shame ultra-orthodox soldiers among their peers. This is very grave, and should by all means be considered a criminal offense that encourages stalking and potential violence. And wouldn't you know it, the organizer is somebody who lives overseas. For that, they'll probably have to call in Interpol to deal with such a creep who's abetting anti-military harassment.
According to the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, which filed the request with police, a campaign is under way to build a database of ultra-Orthodox soldiers, complete with names, pictures, and addresses, in order to threaten and discourage recruitment of ultra-Orthodox to the IDF.
“We urge the public to take a picture of all haredim [ultra-Orthodox] in uniform in the neighborhood,” a message distributed two weeks ago over ultra-Orthodox WhatsApp groups said. “From now on all the haredim that join the army will know that sooner or later his picture will be distributed publicly in a database and he will not be able to escape from the public eye!” “The movement attaches great importance to clear and effective protection from harm for those who serve in the IDF,” the Movement for Quality Government said, “it is our duty as a public to promote equality of service, mutual support and integration of ultra-Orthodox public in Israel.”
According to an organizer of the initiative, who lives abroad, and spoke to Channel 2 anonymously, the database already has hundreds photographs.
On a related note, Avigdor Lieberman's said at a Hanuka gathering that Haredi extremists attacking soldiers are embracing a form of idolatry:
The Defense Minister attacked the phenomenon of shaming and harassing of haredi IDF soldiers, comparing the phenomenon to 'idolatry.' He added that he hoped to see the day when a haredi soldier became the IDF Chief of Staff.I can see where he's coming from. Basically, the Haredi extremists succumbed to idolatry in the form of anti-army hostility for the sake of Big Brother gurus with no moral compass. They have no business staying in Israel.
He said that there was no contradiction between military service and Torah study. "King David did not fight? Joshua was not a warrior? I think that they understood the Torah and Judaism at least as Rabbi Deri and Rabbi Litzman."
"So I believe that you are going the most direct route, incorporating Judaism, but also defending the homeland, and also protecting the Jewish people." he told the soldiers gathered at the ceremony.
[...] Liberman slammed those who act to harass or shame haredi soldiers. '' Anyone who tries to denounce [soldiers] in the name of Torah, who tries to shame soldiers - is simply engaged in idolatry. It is not Judaism. It is definitely not compatible with Jewish values."
