Hooters is kowtowing to Islam
The term "Hooters Girl" has long been associated with skimpy tops and short skirts, but they might look a little different in Asia.If they want to cater to family friendly audiences, that's fine. But Islam is not family-friendly, and the managers' inability to distinguish between what is a culture worthy of respect and what isn't is galling. It makes no difference whether the chairman defends their concept stateside; if he kowtows to Islam, that's bad.
In the Jakarta outlet for example, the company is working on a new uniform that will feature longer skirts, higher necklines and thicker stockings.
“We want to be culturally respectful,” Neil Bailey, the president of Hooters Asia told news outlet Channel NewsAsia.
“We sat down with members of the local governing boards and advisors of a mosque nearby. We showed them our website and said: ‘This is who we are. We know this is not acceptable so what would be acceptable?"
The outlet has a Halal menu that has a selection for kids included, and the restaurant is decked out with high chairs and booster seats.
