An explosion in the St. Petersburg subway system left at least 9 people dead and dozens injured on Monday, Russian anti-terrorism officials said. It's possible that Islamofascists from Chechnya could've been responsible for this particular horror, and they're definitely posing a danger right nearby, as this report should indicate.
There were initial reports of another blast, but Russian authorities only confirmed one explosion. State media intially put the death toll at 10, but Russia’s National Anti-terrorist Committee said nine people were killed.
Within two hours, Russia authorities found and deactivated another bomb at a separate busy St. Petersburg subway station, Vosstaniya Square by the Moscow railway station, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.
The St. Petersburg prosecutor’s office declared the incident a terrorist attack. It came as President Vladimir Putin visited St. Petersburg -- his hometown and Russia’s second-largest city.
Various Russian officials said between 25 and 34 people were being treated for injuries, some of them serious.
Ambulances gathered at the entrance to the Sennaya Ploshchad metro station in the heart of St. Petersburg. According to officials, the device -- according to some reports, packed with shrapnel -- was detonated between Sennaya and the next station, called Technical Institute.
Social media users posted photographs from one subway station in the city center, showing people lying on the floor and a train with a mangled door nearby.
“Everything was covered in smoke, there were a lot of firefighters,” Maria Smirnova, a student on a train behind the one where a bomb went off, told the Dozhd television channel. “Firefighters shouted us to run for the exit and everyone ran. Everyone was panicking.”
