It looks like there's another case of a religious cult leader in Israel who was keeping women and children as slaves, and has now thankfully been arrested for it:
Israeli police have arrested a rabbi who is suspected of holding around 50 women and children in conditions of slavery.More info over here:
The arrest follows a raid on a complex in Jerusalem, where the alleged victims are believed to have been kept isolated from their families.
The women had been punished in various ways and had money stolen from them, police said.
The suspect, in his 60s, has denied doing anything wrong.
He was detained in an ultra-Orthodox district in central Jerusalem on suspicion of running a "closed community" where women and children "worked under conditions of slavery", police said in a statement.
Authorities suspect the school, which operated as a separate and tightly knit-community, was in practice a cult which used coercion and abuse to force dozens of women and children to remain there against their will. The authorities have thankfully extended custody time for the culprits. There really needs to be a law that can prevent cults in this country. If there had been, it's possible the Lev Tahor cult could've been prevented.
The ten suspects arrested in the raid were taken into custody on suspicion of holding victims in slave-like conditions, child abuse, and sexual abuse.
The suspects are slated to be brought before the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court at 1:00 p.m. Monday for an extension of their arrests.
Roughly 50 women and a number of children were held at the compound in crowded and poorly maintained facilities.
Police say the investigation was opened following reports that the school headmaster had used force and various punishments to coerce members to remain a part of the community, compelling them to work while pocketing the money they earned.
