Yaakov Litzman still won't recognize importance of health concerns during Covid19 pandemic
United Torah Judaism chief Yaakov Litzman called on haredim to take to the streets in protest of the upcoming nationwide lockdown, set to span the Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot holidays.Wow, this is just SO MUCH more important than keeping healthy, right? It's bad enough when there's Islamists, secular leftist citizens and non-Haredis who aren't being responsible. But for someone in such a prominent role to encourage this kind of behavior is offensive, and draws attention away from anybody else who could be doing worse. And to think this disgraceful man was health minister! Lest we forget his role in the Malka Leifer scandal, for that matter, and how he violated the regulations of his own former health ministry.
Litzman, who had served as Construction and Housing Minister, resigned this Sunday from the government in protest of the Coronavirus Cabinet’s support for a new lockdown.
Channel 11 released recordings from a recent conference of the Gur Hasidic movement – of which Litzman is a member – in which Litzman can be heard calling on haredim to protest the lockdown and promising to help them obtain permits for the protest.
“We have representatives in every city council, and we’re going to make protests after the holiday at 10:00 p.m. in every city: Ashdod, Bnei Brak, Arad, Hatzor – every city.”
“I’ll help you. Protests are permitted… so why should it be prohibited for us? We’re protesting the fact that they won’t let us pray [in synagogues] on Yom Kippur.”
There's even Breslov Haredis who've made embarrassments of themselves by going to eastern Europe and got stuck in Belarus on the way to Ukraine so they could attend a pilgrimage in Uman. And some of them, wouldn't you know it, are even willing to blame the Netanyahu government for the limbo they're stuck in. Some are even jammed between borders and sleeping out in the cold. Honestly, it's hard to feel sorry for them if they won't put "pikuach nefesh" above their religious concerns. This failure to consider why good health is more crucial than religion proper has cost this country only so much. When will Litzman finally retire from politics and quit setting such poor examples?
