Oregon symbolizes the collapse of the USA's west coast by legalizing bad drugs
Oregon has become the first US state to decriminalise possession of hard drugs including cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, in small quantities. This is a definite disaster, considering children can likely get hold of drugs like these and fall ill from them. What next, will they make the penalties for sexual assault more lenient? Ugh. This reminds me of an old joke I once saw in the 1968 movie "What's So Bad About Feeling Good?", which went something like this: "New York is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here." I'm thinking the same about Portland and much of Oregon now, except that it's not funny at all. It's just truly awful.
The law amendment, approved by voters in parallel with the presidential election, brings the state’s drug laws into step with the world’s most lenient countries including the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal and the Czech Republic.
It was one of 120 state laws and amendments voted on in 32 states as Americans chose the next president.
With Measure 110, Oregonians arrested with small amounts of drugs will avoid trial and jail time. Instead, possession will be treated like a speeding ticket, with violators paying a $100 fine and attending a free addiction programme.
