Lev Tahor overlord sentenced to 12 years in prison
Nachman Helbrans and Mayer Rosner, two senior leaders of the radical ultra-Orthodox cult Lev Tahor were sentenced to 12 years in prison last week, for orchestrating the 2018 kidnapping of a 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy in New York state, the US Department of Justice announced in a statement. But a most disappointing defense in all this affair came from the mother and her children who were kidnapped:
Helbrans, 40, and Rosner, 45, were convicted in November 2021 of kidnapping, sex trafficking, and child sexual exploitation. Thursday's ruling also imposed a five-year suspended sentence on both men.
"No mother should ever have to wake up to find her children missing. And no child should ever be forced into a sexual relationship. Today's sentencing sends a clear message: those who kidnap and sexually exploit children will be prosecuted and punished to the full extent of the law," said Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, in a statement.
“There is every indication that if he is released he will commit the same crime again,” the prosecution said, noting that Helbrans had attempted to kidnap the children a second time after an initial arrest. It's hugely devastating that, despite glaring signs the monster is more than fully willing to pull the crimes again upon release, the mom's willing to forgive to the point of asking for a reduced sentence, which is indeed what Helbrans got, and likely pressured the children to do the same. It's no shock if other adult members of the clan followed suit. Helbrans and Rosner deserved a far longer sentence, and the clannists don't understand any of that due to all the indoctrination they suffered at his evil father's hands. The man definitely needs a psychiatrist, but not somebody from within ultra-Orthodoxy itself. For now, Helbrans and Rosner must be kept far away from children, and should be made to do hard labor.
The mother of the children who were kidnapped, Helbrans’s sister, pleaded for leniency.
“Even though my children and I have suffered from his actions we have forgiven him,” she told the court.
[...] She asked that Helbrans be given counseling and “guidance” instead of prison time.
“My brother needs help,” she said tearfully. “In jail, he cannot fully heal. The longer Nachman suffers, the longer I will suffer too.”
Helbrans’s lawyer, Bruce Koffsky, said the victim, unnamed because she is a minor, also sent in a letter of support for Helbrans, as did other Lev Tahor members.
