It was utterly dumb to vote down a bill recognizing the Armenian Holocaust, even if Yair Lapid sponsored it
The Knesset rejected a bill sponsored by Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid to have Israel recognize the Armenian Genocide, in a preliminary vote Wednesday. “There is no reason that the Knesset, which represents a nation that went through the Holocaust, shouldn’t recognize the Armenian Genocide and have a remembrance day for it,” Lapid said.As bad as Lapid's now proving himself to be, that was still no reason to vote against the bill. It builds no confidence between two nations, and people could think Israel's a sellout to Turkey's Islamofascists.
Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said sent a parliamentary delegation to the 100th anniversary event in Yerevan, but will not take an official stance on the matter, “in light of its complexity and diplomatic repercussions, and because it has a clear political connection.”
Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein called on the government in 2015 to change its stance, and in 2016 the Knesset Education Committee recognized the genocide.
The chairman of Armenia's National Committe in Jerusalem, however, believes that sooner or later, the Israeli political scene will recognize the horror Turkey's Islamofascists caused in the early 20th century during WW1. I certainly hope so, because this is getting irritating already.
