Dovish Colin Powell endorses Obama

Colin Powell may have been a prominent joint Chief of Staff in the US Military, but as a Secretary of State, he was almost as bad as Condi Rice has ultimately proven herself to be. Now, Powell has come out in favor of Barack Obama, but the question is, has he done this too late? Before we get to that, let's take a look at the questions surrounding his conservative credentials. As Hot Air observes:
Unlike endorsers like Christopher Buckley, Douglas Kmiec, or Michael Smerconish, Powell has never publicly identified himself as a conservative activist.
And IMO, that could very well describe my perception of him - far from being a true conservative, he's actually seemed rather...dovish.

And on the question of if he's made his endorsement too late, Morrissey says:
However, I don’t think this will have the same impact it may have had in the summer, for two reasons. First, I think most people expected Powell to endorse Obama, and most of us expected it at the Democratic convention. Powell hasn’t hidden his disdain for his former colleagues well, especially while his closest aide Richard Armitage spent most of his time ripping them. Coming as it does now, it may impact some voters who still feel uncomfortable with Obama’s lack of experience. Otherwise, I don’t think anyone likely to be swayed by this endorsement didn’t already factor it into their thinking.
I guess that could sum things up fairly well. But as Michelle Malkin observes, it's basically a case of putting hope over reality.

Update: Reliapundit at the Astute Bloggers has more, including a picture of Powell meeting with Yasir Arafat.

Because the dovish Powell opposed finishing the job in 1991, American forces had to go and fight a second war.

Update 2: Debbie Schlussel points out how Powell has been advising Obama for at least a year now.
