Benny Begin spoke at Union League
Speaking without notes, Mr. Begin, in an attempt to refrain from repeating his previous speeches, focused on a psychological factor. He emphasized the fact that in the last 20 years it has become difficult for Israel to impress upon Americans the existence of evil in our Middle East neighborhood. “With the safety of a continent surrounded by two oceans, it is hard to comprehend in depth that not everyone is as nice as the American people.” Much like today, Mr. Begin added, it was difficult in the 1930’s to convince Americans that the war against Germany was their war also.Which disqualifies them from any kind of leadership. Terrorists like them who prey on defenseless civilians cannot and should not be recognized in any way as leaders.
Mr. Begin spoke of what he considers to be a key obstacle to the way reality is perceived in today’s America and the West in general. “Post-modernism and political correctness changed everything,” Begin charged. “Truth does not exist anymore. Instead, there are many truths” he said. “We need emissaries who understand the right cause and who know how to differentiate it from the wrong causes. We need someone who can penetrate the lies being perpetrated.”
Mr. Begin’s last reference was to the Sixth Congress of Fatah, led by Mahmoud Abbas, which took place in Bethlehem this past August 6. He pointed out that some in the U.S. Administration had high hopes that the conference would bring change. Those same people hailed the reelection of Abu Mazen and the rise of the “younger generation” leaders. Mr. Begin stressed, however, that the “younger generation” meant 50 plus year old men who are tainted with a past of active terrorism.
Many people applauded the election of Marwan Barghouti and others to leadership positions. Few bothered, however, to notice the real substance of the convention, according to Mr. Begin. While a new Fatah face was supposed to emerge and that there were expectations in both Washington and Jerusalem that the Palestinian National Charter would be discussed or changed, the final resolution taken by the convention regarding the charter called for “Armed Struggle as a strategy … and the elimination of the Zionist entity….”And lest we forget, Islamofascism is what drives that standing of theirs. Isn't that precisely what they should be slammed for then?
With a tone of voice that closely resembles his father’s, Benny Begin thundered, “Some friends have told me that it is just words for domestic consumption, but the elimination of the Zionist presence is Fatah’s real goal!” Not recognizing Israel as a Jewish State is, Mr. Begin emphasized, embedded in the Fatah consciousness.
