12 people dead in shooting at Fort Hood base in Texas

Horrible news from the army base in Texas, where at least 2 gunmen went on a rampage (Hat tip: Wizbang):
A mass shooting at Ft. Hood military base in Texas has left at least 7 dead and 12 wounded, officials told Fox News.

There were two shooters in the Army base massacre in Killeen, the New York Post reported. One suspect was in custody and the other was on the loose, Fox News confirmed.

The attack apparently happened at the base's Soldier Readiness Center. Army officials didn't know whether the victims were civilians or military personnel.

The men were reportedly dressed in Army fatigues, but military officials couldn't confirm that they were Army personnel.
According to Hot Air, CNN reports that now 9 people are dead from this repulsive onslaught. Just who the gunmen are is not clear yet. I'll try to post an update when I get the chance.

Update: one of the suspects is a military officer. 12 are now reported dead and at least 27 people injured. There were 3 culprits who attacked.

Update 2: this report appears to have been deliberately edited, but Allahpundit copied the text giving clues to who the culprits could be and what their motives are:
“A senior administration official told NBC News analyst Roger Cressey that the suspect who was in custody was an Army major with an Arabic-sounding name. The official said the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood.”
Again, they're trying to avoid the hard answers.

Update 3: now, one of the suspects names has been confirmed by ABC: one Malik Nadal Hasan:
The suspected gunman was identified as Major Malik Nadal Hasan. He was killed and two other suspects have been apprehended, Lt. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn’t sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

The general called the attack “a terrible tragedy, stunning.” He said the community was “absolutely devastated.”
Brian Ross of ABC says that Hasan was a convert to Islam.
