Still more soldier effigies and flags were burnt by Haredi extremists
Israeli politicians were up in arms Sunday after learning that effigies of IDF soldiers and Israeli flags had been burned by haredi extremists in Jerusalem on Saturday night. But did the Haredi political party reps join the condemnation of the Karta kreeps and such? If this article is accurate, they didn't:
The incident took place in the ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim at a Lag Ba'omer bonfire. The effigies were burned to protest the drafting of haredi youths to the military as part of Israel's mandatory military service.
[...] Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the incident.
"On Saturday evening, a despicable incident occurred in Jerusalem," Netanyahu said.
"A marginal but extreme haredi sect linked to the [anti-Zionist] Naturei Karta burned effigies of IDF soldiers wearing IDF uniforms, and Israeli flags, in an attempt to attack haredi soldiers. This is a loathsome act. IDF soldiers defend us all, including the haredim, including these people. I expect, request and demand that every public leader condemn this contemptible act, and I also ask that the police apprehend the culprits."
Neither United Torah Judaism chairman and Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman nor Shas chairman and Interior Minister Arye Deri, and almost no other haredi MKs, commented on or criticized the burning in effigy.Well, how about that. The only slam any of them could come up with was against the government itself. No comments on whether this is a negative example set by Neturei Karta and their minions. The Haredi parties aren't fit to be members of a ruling coalition.
One exception was MK Yaakov Margi who blamed “the government, the police and the State Attorney, who have acted flaccidly against these law breakers.”
