What if the Haredis led to more Reform adherents in Israel?
The seven percent of Jews in Israel identifying with the movement marks a significant increase from the last survey conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute in 2010, which recorded a meager 3.7% of Israeli Jews hailing from the liberal stream. [...]If this poll has any meat to it, what it suggests is the Haredis' selfish attitude regarding the Western Wall and a demand for a monopoly on Judaism prompted some Israelis to start adhering to Reform Judaism. Naturally, chances are that these are leftists, unfortunately, but not something that matters to the Haredis, probably because, if there's something they have in common, it's the belief in socialism.
The director of the Movement for Progressive Judaism, Gilad Kariv, said that the latest statistics confirmed that despite the ongoing opposition by the rabbinical establishment against Reform Jewry and the budgetary discrimination, many Israelis support the movement.
A clear majority of the population—58% versus 33%—supports the right of Reform and Conservative Jews and of Women of the Wall to pray at the Western Wall. The figures also revealed that 49% of those polled agreed that the Kotel compromise damaged the relationship with Diaspora Jewry, while 34% disagreed.
[...] An overwhelming majority, 58%, of Israelis polled rejected the position that the Chief Rabbinate contributes to the identity of the state of Israel and brings the Israeli public closer to tradition. 35% disagreed.
So, I hope movements like Women For The Wall and their heads like Leah Aharoni are proud of the mess they've caused, proving little more than they've got contempt for concepts like the 1st Amendment's Religion Clause in the USA, and despise the notion it could be emulated here. Now, for anybody who thinks Reform is a degrading, perverted take on Judaism, there's the sad news the Haredis only resurrected it and encouraged new adherents to become vindictive, all because of a socialist movement they ironically have no opposition to. And the Haredi socialists will probably never apologize for leading to more shambles.
