Ilham Omar has to be penalized seriously for her offenses, and so does Ocasio-Cortez
Democratic leaders will put forward a vote on the House floor Wednesday to denounce anti-Semitism in the wake of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s latest inflammatory remarks about Jewish support for Israel. But it’s unlikely that Omar will pay a real price for her bigotry. [...]It's true that much more serious steps need to be taken against Omar. But then, they should also be taken against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who's been serving as Omar's apologist:
It was only a few weeks ago that Omar tweeted her notorious remark, “It’s all about the Benjamins, baby,” insinuating that Jews exercise undue control over foreign policy through their wealth. Under intense pressure from Jewish groups and her colleagues, she walked back from that comment, with its nasty historical echoes, and “unequivocally” apologized. “I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes.”
The lessons apparently haven’t taken. The claim that pro-Israel groups “push for allegiance to a foreign country” is far worse than the more common trope that Jews who support Israel have dual or divided loyalty. “Allegiance” means singular loyalty; Omar says that the Zionist lobby requires lawmakers, Jewish or otherwise, to pledge undivided fidelity to Israel.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighed in on the Ilhan Omar controversy, saying it is “hurtful” that colleagues have reprimanded her fellow House freshman over alleged anti-Semitic remarks but have been less forthcoming about bigotry aimed at other groups. She's already proven as bad a politician as Omar is, and on those grounds, should be condemned as well. She's not doing anybody any favors with her defense of anti-semites.
House Democrats have taken to Twitter and advanced a resolution to condemn antisemitism — without naming Omar — after the Minnesota Democrat twice suggested that supporters for Israel are demanding “allegiance to a foreign country.”
Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democrat who has become a party superstar, counseled a less confrontational approach in dealing with comments like Omar’s.
“One of the things that is hurtful about the extent to which reprimand is sought of Ilhan is that no one seeks this level of reprimand when members make statements about Latinx and other communities,” Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday morning on Twitter.
“‘Calling out’ is one of the measures of last resort, not 1st or 2nd resort,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We do it when repeated attempts to ‘call in’ are disrespected or ignored. And I believe that Ilhan, in her statement a few weeks ago, has demonstrated a willingness to listen+work with impacted communities.”
