An ultra-Orthodox mayor of an unnamed city was questioned by police Sunday over his suspected involvement with decades-old homicide cases linked to an extremist ultra-Orthodox sect, reports said.What if that former minister was a member of United Torah Judaism? Police later announced that two suspects had been detained for interrogation, but gave no further details regarding their identities.
The two suspects are to be brought before a court on Tuesday to extend their remand, police said.
A number of people have been detained recently over the death of a teenage boy in the 1980s and the unsolved murder of a man in the 1990s.
Most details of the investigation are under a gag order that is in place until the end of the year.
The investigation into the disappearance and suspected murder of 17-year-old Nissim Shitrit and the murder of 41-year-old Avi Edri is tied to the Shuvu Bonim sect, run by convicted sex offender Eliezer Berland.
Berland, currently jailed for fraud, was remanded earlier this month to allow his continued interrogation in connection to the murders. A police representative said that there was evidence showing Berland’s responsibility for, and involvement in, the cases.
One of those arrested last month was the husband of a woman who has told police she was forced by sect members to lure one of the victims to a specific location. An attorney for the woman has said that her client was a victim of the extremist sect, and is cooperating with police in order to see justice done.
Another suspect is reportedly the son of a former senior government minister.
Earlier on Sunday, Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended Berland's imprisonment after he implicated himself in the cold cases. Police suspect that he ordered the murders, Israel Hayom reported.Considering Berland was a sex offender, it's the height of hypocrisy he'd arrange to have the victim assaulted for being heterosexual. An absolute abomination.
Shortly before his disappearance, Shitrit was kidnapped from his yeshiva in Ashdod and beaten by a mishmeret tzniyut, (modesty enforcers) who warned him not to go out with girls, according to Israel Hayom.

The current mayor of an ultra-Orthodox city was present and played an active role in the murder of Avi Edri 30 years ago, police told the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court on Monday.And here's the really bizarre part:
The mayor, whose identity has been barred from publication, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of involvement in the 1990 murder, which is also linked to convicted sex offender Eliezer Berland and his extremist Shuvu Bonim sect. The magistrate’s court extended the unnamed suspect’s remand by four days at the end of Monday’s hearing.
“In the evidence I have presented [to the court], it can be understood that the defendant acted together with others in an operation that led to [Edri’s] murder, and was also involved in the murder itself,” a police representative told the court.
When pressed by the mayor’s attorney, the police representative added that the suspect was present at the murder as well. The mayor was 17 years old at the time.
The police representative said that law enforcement was aware of the mayor’s ties to the crime, but only recently uncovered evidence that led to his arrest Sunday along with seven others. Their remands were also extended at Monday’s hearing.
The judge said during the hearing that the mayor had dressed up as a woman and driven a vehicle heading a convoy that led Edri to the murder scene, the Kan public broadcaster reported. Several other suspects awaited them and they proceeded to beat Edri to death at Berland’s direction, according to the evidence read aloud by the judge in court on Monday.Usually, you'd think these ultra-Orthodox sects would abhor transvestism, but clearly, that doesn't apply when they're dealing in murderous behavior. And all over a subject wanting to be heterosexual. Which says quite a bit about their twisted mentalities, by which they even graphically murdered and desecrated the victim's body.

Helbrans, the late, sadistic leader of Lev Tahor (and father of the current leader who's now in police custody), was absolutely asking for the punishment he got, when he drowned in a Mexican river a few years back. But even in the NYC Haredi communities, bad things can happen if nobody does something to be on the lookout, and the insular conduct they run can enable awful incidents like sexual abuse to occur. Of course, the interviewee lived so long with the cult, that's why he'd need time to get a full understanding of that.
There was one woman who was allergic to sesame seeds, used in tahina. One evening around Sukkot, in fall 2017, in Guatemala, the rabbi wanted to test her faith and told her to eat it. She told him she could die, but after fighting over it, he kept instructing her to eat it anyway.

Is that religion? That's horrific. That wouldn't happen in any of the Jewish communities around here — Williamsburg, New Square. That wouldn't happen. It's only Lev Tahor.
They don't want people to see the outside world. No one is able to go anywhere without the leader's permission.

Two top leaders of the extremist Jewish group Lev Tahor were convicted of child sexual exploitation and kidnapping by a federal court in New York on Wednesday.It was very fortunate the 2 monsters were tracked down and arrested, and the children were rescued from their clutches. This is exactly why nobody sensible should want to live such a lifestyle, and definitely not part of an insular community. Let's hope Helbrans and Rosner are locked away for decades to come, and in solitary confinement, without any contect with each other. And they must be kept far away from the children they abused.
Nachman Helbrans and Mayer Rosner face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison for the conviction. The sentence for the case at the federal Southern District of New York court will be meted out later by a judge.
“Nachman Helbrans and Mayer Rosner brazenly kidnapped two children from their mother in the middle of the night to return a 14-year-old girl to an illegal sexual relationship with an adult man. Today’s verdict makes clear that our Office – and our law enforcement partners – will not be deterred from achieving justice for victims of child sexual exploitation,” said US Attorney Damian Williams.
Around 2017, Helbrans had arranged for the girl, his niece, to be “married” to an adult from the group. The girl was paired to the man when she was 13 and he was 19, although they were never legally married since such a union would be illegal.
The pair then “immediately began a sexual relationship with the goal of procreation,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement, in line with the group’s usual practice.
Lev Tahor leadership, including Helbrans and Rosner, “required young brides to have sex with their husbands, to tell people outside Lev Tahor that they were not married, to pretend to be older, and to deliver babies inside their homes instead of at a hospital, to conceal the mothers’ young ages from the public,” the statement said.
