Israeli police not handling Simon the Just neighborhood properly
Far-right MK Itamar Ben Gvir returned Monday morning to the flashpoint Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, where he has vowed to maintain a parliamentary office in support of its Jewish community, and accused the police minister of ordering officers to assault him during overnight clashes. Is that supposed to be a subtle attack on Ben Gvir? Because it's very offensive what happened to the man, and the police officials involved should be ashamed of themselves and apologize. Even if I don't find Ben Gvir appealing, this was entirely uncalled for, and is practically an insult to the Jewish families the police so far have failed to adequately protect from Islamofascists.
Ben Gvir, who in a video was seen fainting as he tussled with police overnight, arrived in the morning with a bandage around his head. He released an image of a letter from Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital discharging him from the emergency room and confirming that he had suffered a head injury.
Asked by reporters why he was wearing the dressing, Ben Gvir accused Public Security Minister Omer Barlev of instructing officers to rough him up.
Barlev, he said, will not be able to “lie” about what happened as there is video footage “that shows how they beat my aides without any authority, and, it seems, he gave the orders to do so,” Ben Gvir said.
“Omer Barlev gave an order to beat me up, not just [to take apart] the office but also me personally, and the officers carry it out.”
Earlier, Barlev had tweeted that “there has never been a member of Knesset who raised his hand against a police officer.”
Officials had reportedly approached Ben Gvir to reach a deal that would include him dismantling the office. Ben Gvir was said to demand that permanent security forces be stationed at the home following the firebombing, and that additional security cameras be deployed in the area, in return for him leaving.Shove or not, their own approach was inappropriate, and perpetuates a repellent image of the Israeli authorities.
Officers moved in to dismantle the makeshift office on Sunday evening, but it was not fully taken down.
A video showed Ben Gvir fall onto the ground and apparently faint as he tried to shove his way past a group of policemen.
As bad as that affair is, the police did, however, arrest 2 suspects in the arson against a Jewish-owned home:
Israeli security forces have arrested two suspects in the firebombing of a Jewish home in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, police announced Monday.Correct. Ben Gvir has ideally filed complaints against the officers involved:
No one was home during the incident over the weekend, which has helped escalate tensions in the flashpoint neighborhood and sparked new clashes on Saturday and Sunday. A police officer who entered the burning house was lightly hurt from smoke inhalation.
Officers found eight Molotov cocktails, gloves and a knit cap while searching the home of one of the suspects, according to a police statement, which said the Shin Bet security service took part in the arrests.
The suspects, both in their 20s, were taken in by the Shin Bet for questioning. Authorities did not say where they were from. The investigation was ongoing. [...]
Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, voiced support for Ben Gvir, who was seen fainting during overnight clashes with police.
“I unequivocally condemn the act of violence against MK Itamar Ben Gvir. This isn’t ‘Sheikh Jarrah,’ this is Jerusalem, our capital,” he said during a Likud faction meeting.
Religious Zionism MK Itamar Ben Gvir filed a complaint on Tuesday against the police officers who he claims attacked him during his stay in the flashpoint Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem over the last few days. He's also going to sue the Knesset speaker for removing him from a hearing on a serious issue. And frankly, this legal procedure is something that has to be done. And most importantly, the city region has to be kept safe in all areas.
“The police crossed a red line and physically attacked me,” he said. “There is no place in the police force for violent police officers and this is a crime they should be prosecuted for. I expect the police to do their job and bring these violent cops to justice.”
