Haredi extremists in Mea Shearim continue to hang up PLO flags
Passers-by walking today (Tuesday) in Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neighborhood spotted a Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) flag flying [on] an electrical cable between the neighborhood's buildings. This is also the same neighborhood where thugs rioted over construction of a train line, among other petty issues, and led to the injury of a mother. Is it any wonder something of this sort could also take place? Insularity breeds this very insanity.
A small group of haredi extremists have flown the PLO flag in Mea Shearim in the past to demonstrate their opposition to Zionism and the State of Israel. In those cases, police arrived to take down the flags.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir earlier this month instructed Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai to order the police to remove all PLO flags flown in public places in Israel.
Ben-Gvir passed the order to the Commissioner based on the fact that flying the PLO flag is considered support for a terrorist organization.
"It is inconceivable that lawbreakers will wave terrorist flags, incite and encourage terrorism, and therefore I ordered the removal of the flags of support for terrorism from the public space and to stop the incitement against the State of Israel. Identifying with a terrorist and harming IDF soldiers is not covered under freedom of speech," said Ben-Gvir.
