IDF enters Rafah at last
The Israeli military has launched a ground operation in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip, with clashes reported between Israeli forces and Hamas militants near the Rafah border crossing, according to Palestinian reports. The government and IDF have done the right thing to take action now. Especially after it's been discovered the USA government blindsided them:
The Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing came under Israeli control, presumably in order to prevent smuggling from Egypt. The IDF launched an offensive Monday night in eastern Rafah led by the 162nd Armored Division with the 401st and Giv'ati Brigades. Effectively, the Gaza side of the crossing has been cut off from the Philadelphi Route and is under the operational control of IDF forces. In less than half a day, the IDF struck over 100 Hamas targets.
During the strike, 20 terrorists were killed, and three significant tunnels were found. Additionally, a vehicle-borne explosive was destroyed as it attempted to approach a tank. Special units are sweeping the area for continued combat. There are no casualties among IDF forces.
The move comes after the Palestinian residents of eastern neighborhoods in Rafah were instructed to evacuate on Monday. It follows the collapse of indirect ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with a senior US official telling CNN that "what Hamas agreed to is different from what Egypt and Israel presented last week."
Israeli officials said Monday that Biden administration officials had secretly worked with mediators, without Israel’s knowledge, to craft a Hamas “agreement” to ceasefire terms in an attempt to deter an attack on Hamas in Rafah.Read more at the article. It's a disgrace, but not surprising at this point, that Biden's bunch has been doing everything possible to sabotage efforts to combat Hamas and save hostages, if possible.
On Monday, as Breitbart News reported, with Israel beginning its operation in Rafah by warning civilians to leave, Hamas suddenly announced that it agreed to a “ceasefire” — on unfamiliar terms that Israel had not actually offered.
Israel, regarding the move as a bluff aimed at the international media in an attempt to pressure Israel to abandon the operation, decided to send junior-level diplomats to Cairo, Egypt, to explore talks, while continuing to fight in Rafah.
The White House seized on the announcement of an agreement by Hamas, though it would not say (or speculate) what was in the agreement itself, puzzling reporters.
Update: see also this report about Biden and company withholding weapons shipments to Israel.
Update 2: this kind of approach from Biden's bunch has also recently led to minister Orit Strock to say the following:
Minister of Settlements and National Missions Orit Strock, in an interview on Sunday with Radio 104.5FM, discussed the impending hostage and ceasefire deal and criticized the American administration's conduct. This is what happens when leftists have the steering wheel.
"I am very worried this morning, I think the things were said pretty much clearly that in fact, the US is committing, instead of us, to stop the war. It's saying most openly and clearly that the first step as far as it's concerned is ending the war."
She also noted: "The State of Israel is not another star on the American flag. (Israel) can and must stand up for itself."
In response the host, Gadi Nes, asked if she believes the US is not a friend of Israel. "The US doesn't do the minimum demanded by the status (of a friend), it doesn't deserve to be called a friend of the State of Israel."
Update 3: Republicans in Congress have strongly condemned the Biden administration for withholding weapons from Israel. More on the topic here.
Update 4: Robert Spencer addresses the situation.
