Foul fundraising
On Monday, Channel 10 news reported that Sharon had collected $10,000 each from 15 couples at a dinner organized by a supporter in New York for his run for party leadership, allegedly in violation of the Political Parties Law.One Jerusalem says:
As this story develops, the Associated Press, Reuters, and other foreign news services have filed stories, speculation about its impact on Sharon's efforts to stay in power are common. In less than a week the Likud central committee will vote on whether to have early primaries in November. A move Sharon opposes. That's a good argument there, but at the same time, what's interesting about the report is that it weakens the credibility of Sharon, and shows that he's doing little to improve upon his already tarnished image in the eyes of the public.
It is certain that the investigations associated with this story and the intense news coverage will have an impact on Israel's future. Lets hope that Israel's enemies do not interpret this development as a sign of Israel's weakness and try to attack.
And another point to be made here is that - it shows that the press turned to the "tissue-paper tactic", in which they basically "use" the person in question like tissue paper, then toss them aside when no longer seeing any use in them. This can be an important lesson for just about any and all politicians in how the press cannot be relied upon to be truly on their side, regardless of whether they be left or right.
Put another way, this shows how the media, after seeing Sharon do what they wanted, now casts him aside seeing no more use in him, and without genuinely thanking him either.
