What's the real "crecent of embrace", and who is Mahmoud Maawad?
Both the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review agrees that the crescent does not belong in the memorial to the heroic passengers of Flight 93. However, the Philadelphia Inquirer, a publication of the degrading Knight-Ridder syndicate, goes the Chomskyite route by calling all critics of the crescent "blind." How revolting. I should hope that if the Bulletin is being revived in Philly, that they'll give the citizenry the unbiased news reports that they really deserve, and not the kind of awful anti-Americanism Knight-Ridder seems determined to take up.
Now, here's another interesting subject: an Arab student working in Memphis named Mahmoud Maawad, who may have been planning to pull a hijacking of his own, and was certainly in possesion of an airline uniform illegally. The Memphis Flyer asks:
Was Mahmoud Maawad a University of Memphis student and pilot-wannabe with a passion for flying small planes or an Arab terrorist looking to duplicate the suicide missions of 9/11?This certainly could be yet another case of a terrorist pretending to be an airline student so he could learn how to hijack, so it's good that they caught him. I wonder if he also asked to be taught how to perform a flight takeoff, but not how to land, just like one of the al Qaeda's other terrorist moles who worked in the US?
Federal prosecutors in Memphis aren’t saying, but on Thursday they asked a U.S. magistrate to hold Maawad, 29, whose email logon is “pilot747,” without bond until trial. U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Thomas Anderson agreed with Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Parker, and Maaward becomes the second Memphis resident of Arab descent to be held without bond because of investigations by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. In April, Rafat Mawlawi was jailed in a separate investigation in which prosecutors have linked him to Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaida. He is awaiting trial on October 3rd.
