Patriot Act extended, but ANWR oil program still pending

WASHINGTON - Senators on Wednesday agreed to extend the expiring provisions of the USA Patriot Act for six months to allow the bill's critics to continue to seek additional civil liberty safeguards in the anti-terrorism law. The deal, if passed by the GOP-controlled Senate, would still need to get the approval of the Republican-controlled House and President Bush, but it would keep the Patriot Act provisions from expiring on Dec. 31.
Republican and Democratic senators have been negotiating all day long to try and break an impasse over the anti-terrorism law passed after the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington. It is one of the last pieces of legislation still outstanding in the Senate, which is trying to wrap up its legislative year.
A House-Senate compromise extending 16 expiring provisions of the Patriot Act has been stuck in the Senate for the past week because of a Democratic-led filibuster. Opponents of that bill say they want more safeguards in the legislation, and have asked for more time to seek more civil liberty protections in the law.
The Dems are continuing to mangle their credibility, alas.
As for the oil program in the ANWR, however, the bad news is that the very same Senate that approves extension of the Patriot Act is still balking at approval of the oil drilling program that could help millions of people save on heating and gas for the winter. Not good. As American Outlook says:
The area of land designated ANWR totals 19.6 million acres. Of that, only 2000 acres would be explored if approved by Congress. That is only one-hundredth of one percent (.0001) of the total landmass of ANWR.So what's preventing the program from being approved? It appears to be the same group that tried to filibuster the Patriot Act this week:
Democrats and other eco-zealots resorted to their usual rhetoric about "destroying" the wilderness and protecting the refuge from "development". The only development is what is needed to extract the oil, which amounts to very little overall, and the environment will not be destroyed no matter how many times they repeat it.Correct. And if the Dems are the main ones responsible for getting in the way of the project's approval, then clearly, they do not represent the poor at all, do they?
Update: but not only the bad Democrats have been sabotaging the project. As Neal Boortz reports, even "liberal" Republicans like Lincoln Chafee and Mike DeWine are responsible too. Exactly why they too should not be voted for.
And let's also note for that matter that, whatever the moonbat movement was trying to show, it's not some lush green forest filled with grazing moose where the project was to take place, but rather, the area shown in the picture above, which is just plain, snow-and-ice district, nothing more.
The battle for independance even in the oil business must be continued.
