Rabbi Yits'haq Kaduri, 1898-2006
One of Israel's most respected rabbinical sages, Rabbi Yits'haq Kaduri, passed away this week at 108 years old.
For me, as one of the leading rabbis belonging to the Shas party's council of Torah and Bible sages, he was a man I most respected because, unlike Shas' main spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who in past years advocated surrendering parts of the Land of Israel to the PLO, even going so far as to take the meaning of "piqu'ah nefesh" out of context, Kaduri by contrast did not do that, nor did he approve. Sadly, while he most certainly was one of the party's most respected rabbis, he was largely marginalized, not just by the religious political party itself, but also by the Israeli MSM, who often tried to use Shas as a kind of tool for damaging the Likud's own support base, this in spite of the fact that they really did not truly support Shas.
A few years ago, having become alienated from Shas due to such problems as Rabbi Yosef's own questionable positions, he tried to serve as the spiritual adviser to an alternative party that meant to rival Shas, and that some of his family members were also involved in forming. Alas, it was a failure in the elections.
Another Rabbi, Mordecai Eliyahu, Rishon Le'Tsiyon, former Sephardic chief rabbi, was with Rabbi Kaduri at the hospital, and said the Shma` with him before he passed away. Shas representatives such as Rabbi Yosef, were not present (they did praise him after his death).
Rabbi Kaduri will certainly be missed, and should be honored as a man who'd certainly made quite a few respectable contributions to Israel and the Jewish people. An estimated 300,000 took part in his funeral.
Others honoring Rabbi Kaduri include Point of Pinchas, Cosmic X, Messiah's Branch Articles, Something and Half of Something, Lazer Beams, Mystical Paths, The Town Crier, Yiddish News, Blog Free, Yeshiva World, Aussie Echo, Yeranen Yaakov (plus, here's another one), The Lonely Man of Mechqar, Yehudi Yerushalmi, Shiloh Musings, Judeopundit, Lakewood411, Mesivta Oholet Torah (plus, here's another one), The Ranting Jew.
