Geography teacher pandered to multiculturalism, and was luckily suspended (Update: now he's been reinstated)

Update: as noted below, it appears that even I may have misread the whole subject, and that it was really just an overreaction.

I'm not sure if The Denver Channel is telling everything that needs to be known here, but it looks like there may have been another de-facto Jay Bennish who tried getting wise here:
LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A Jefferson County geography teacher was placed on paid administrative on the second day of school for hanging several flags from other countries in his classroom.

Eric Hamlin said the flags were part of a world geography lesson plan at Carmody Middle School and refused to take them down. The school's principal escorted Hamlin out of class Wednesday morning after he refused to remove the flags of China and Mexico.

The school district placed him on administrative leave for insubordination, citing a Colorado law that makes it illegal to display foreign flags permanently in schools.

"Under state law, foreign flags can only be in the classroom because it's tied to the curriculum. And the principal looked at the curriculum, talked to the teacher, and found that there was really no curriculum coming up in the next few weeks that supported those flags being in the classroom," said Jeffco Public Schools spokeswoman Lynn Setzer.

But Hamlin said although his curriculum may not speak specifically about those flags, they are used as reference tools for world geography.

"It's much along the lines of a science teacher who puts up a map of the solar system. They may not spend every day and every lesson talking about Mars, but they want the students to see that and to see the patterns of the planets and the order, and the students will observe that and absorb that learning visually," Hamlin said.

Hamlin said that the school district is not only depriving him of a teaching tool but also taking away from his students' education.

"The major problem I see here is with the law that limits educators," Hamlin said.

"We have to uphold state law. We really have no discretion when it comes to upholding the law," Setzer said.

Hamlin said he understands that the school district is only following state law so he's met with the American Civil Liberties Union and, if necessary, plans on fighting the constitutionality of the law.

This is the fourth year Hamlin has worked within the Jeffco School District, and he said he's hung the flags every year without a problem. This is his first year at Carmody Middle School.

Hamlin, who teaches 7th grade, said he believes the national debate surrounding immigration and the Mexican flag has contributed to the controversy. He wonders if he would have caused such a stir if he had hung flags of Switzerland or Australia instead of Mexico.

Hamlin will be on paid administrative leave indefinitely, pending the outcome of the school district's investigation.
It sounds like what really happened was that he was trying to promote a negative agenda by putting up the flags for the purpose of promoting amnesty for illegal immigrants. Not that this really makes it clear, and let's note that the article does more or less sympathise with Mr. Hamlin.

The school board was quite right to take concern in Hamlin's actions, and if he was in any ways trying to encourage disrespect for the law among the students, then I think there's a case for firing him, and for banishing partisan politics from the classroom. I wonder how many more geography teachers there are who've stooped to this?

Seeing that Hamlin's met with the ACLU, I hope that opponents of that loathsome gang of phonies will be ready to help the Carmody school deal with them if needed. It's Hamlin's first year, and if he's as bad as he may be, let's hope it'll be his last.

Update: The Rocky Mountain News tells of one more flag he displayed: the United Nations. Yeesh, that sure is one good example to give the pupils. Teach 'em to worship a corrupt movement.

Update 2: unfortunately, now Hamlin's been reinstated. Let's hope that, like Jay Bennish, who was eventually put on suspension again, they'll think to do the same.

Update 3: as Slapstick Politics notes, it seems that Hamlin favors diversity! Oh, now isn't that a pip.

Update 4: On another look, it appears that this may have just been a case of overreaction, since it is okay to use flags for educating about the world and various other countries in classes. Here's Rhymes With Right's post about the subject.

Sounds like an idiot principal to me. It's a geography class. Flags are perfectly appropriate.

Sorry, my friend -- you have this one wrong. Flags are appropriate in a geography class -- indeed, in most social studies classrooms.

I wonder if the putz who wrote the law and the idiot principal ould have a fit over the border around my bulletin boards -- flags of the world.

My take is here.

I guess you're right, it was a case of the principal overreacting. All the same, the teacher's favoring of "diversity" does sound suspicious. A good question.

Although the law could be subject to questioning, it is clear that Hamlin was angling for a fight. The flags were not intended solely for educational purposes which of course would be exempt under this law. Hamlin did not inadvertently or accidentally hang the flags with the intention of illustrating some educational point. At best, he intended to increase "diversity" as he himself stated. At worst, he had designs on challenging a state law and chose his classroom as the venue.
