UNmitigated disaster needs to be left already
While the resolution was not passed under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter and so does not have the authority of law, in practice it makes it all but impossible for Israel to defend itself against Hizbullah aggression without being exposed to international condemnation on an unprecedented scale. There's more, if you can read it. See also this extra analysis. Regarding Kofi, I think it's due time already that we remember that this was the man who was a leading architect of the oil-for-food crimes, and is by far one of the most corrupt leaders of the UN to date. The investigation into Kofi's involvement may have been closed, but I think that there is more than enough to warrant a reopening of the investigation. But that aside, the UN is not an entity that anyone who cares about freedom should have to be a member of, or should want their elected government to participate in. Let's be clear, we need to quit our membership there already. The UN's been corrupt almost ever since the beginning, and diplomatic relations do not need to be conducted through them.
This is the case first of all because the resolution places responsibility for determining compliance in the hands of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Annan has distinguished himself as a man capable only of condemning Israel for its acts of self-defense while ignoring the fact that in attacking Israel, its enemies are guilty of war crimes. By empowering Annan to evaluate compliance, the resolution all but ensures that Hizbullah will not be forced to disarm and that Israel will be forced to give up the right to defend itself.
The resolution makes absolutely no mention of either Syria or Iran, without whose support Hizbullah could neither exist nor wage an illegal war against Israel. In so ignoring Hizbullah's sponsors, it ignores the regional aspect of the current war and sends the message to these two states that they may continue to equip terrorist armies in Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority and Iraq with the latest weaponry without paying a price for their aggression.
Speaking of the oil-for-food atrocities, I found an AP article from June 26 with more news:
NEW YORK (AP) -- A South Korean businessman faces trial in Manhattan federal court today in a case stemming from the controversial UN oil-for-food program involving Iraq and Saddam Hussein.More on this at The Blotter. And here's another one from the UPI from just last week:
Prosecutors say Tongsun Park worked as a UN lobbyist for Saddam's government in the early 1990s.
He was indicted last year for violating US laws by conspiring to commit wire fraud, acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government and transporting funds from Iraq to the US to carry out the crime.
Park, a 71-year-old citizen of South Korea, also figured in a notorious 1970s influence-peddling scandal known as Koreagate.
He has pleaded not guilty and could face more than a dozen years in prison if convicted. Opening statements in the case could begin as early as tomorrow.
Prosecutors have asked the judge to ask potential jurors whether they have strong feelings about the war in Iraq that might affect their ability to be impartial.
An Australian court has wrapped up its hearing of a challenge by the wheat exporter AWB Ltd. to the power of the Cole oil-for-food inquiry to demand documents. And, Little Green Footballs and MemriTV (via Marc at USS Neverdock) have some of the latest on George Galloway, one of the worst offenders in the case.
Judge Neil Young reserved judgment Friday on AWB's legal privilege to withhold about 800 documents from the inquiry into AWB's payment of kickbacks to the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein under the U.N. oil-for-food program.
But negotiations between the company and government lawyers has resulted in about 500 disputed documents being released to the Cole inquiry, which will resume hearings on August 22.
Every criminal involved in the OFF scandal should be prosecuted to the full limit of the law for the crimes they committed. And I think there's more than room enough for reopening the case against Kofi too. And let me note again that, a man whose only interest seems to be attacking countries acting in self-defense against their aggressors is not someone whose "movement" anyone needs to be part of.
Update: Hot Air's got some more data on horrible George Galloway, as well as Wizbang.
