Jewish Home party chooses Eli Cohen for mayoral candidate
Bayit Yehudi candidate for of Beit Shemesh Aliza Bloch has deferred to Eli Cohen, an independent, on Thursday afternoon, giving the secular candidate the top slot on the religious-Zionist party’s list. Bloch and Cohen are considered the leading contenders in the effort to topple Shas incumbent Rabbi Moshe Abutbol come the October Mayoral election.I certainly hope they'll be as unified as possible, because with all those horrific Haredi extremists dwelling there now, they need all the unity they can get to unseat the awful Abutbol.
Cohen is the deputy director of Mekorot, the national water company, and a former official at the Jewish Agency.
In an effort not to split the anti-Shas vote, Cohen and Bloch had previously signed an agreement that whichever of the candidates lost a poll conducted this week by pollsters at Mina Tzemach–Dachaf would step aside in favor of the winner. However, Bloch’s decision came prior to the results of the poll, which are expected to be released either tomorrow or Sunday. Cohen told The Jerusalem Post.
Rabbi and MK Dov Lipman's also come out in favor of Cohen.
