Bill Cosby sentenced to 3-10 years in prison for his sex offenses
Bill Cosby was sentenced to between three and 10 years in prison on Tuesday for sexually assaulting a woman, capping the once-beloved comedian’s downfall from “America’s Dad” to convicted felon.Granted, the decision to label Cosby the predator he is under state law was the right thing to do. But the sentence he got is still too light, and he should've gotten far more. His past career in Hollywood should not entail leniency.
Cosby, 81, was found guilty in April of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for the drugging and sexual assault of his one-time friend Andrea Constand, a former Temple University administrator, at his Philadelphia home in 2004.
He was the first celebrity to be convicted for sexual abuse since the start of the #MeToo movement, the national reckoning with misconduct that has brought down dozens of powerful men in entertainment, politics and other fields.
His lawyers have already vowed to appeal the conviction.
Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas judge Steven O’Neill also decided to designate Cosby a “sexually violent predator” under Pennsylvania law.
Under that designation, Cosby will have to undergo monthly counseling and register as a sex offender with police for the rest of his life. Neighbors and schools will be notified of his address and crimes.
He's now just barely begun what he was handed down in a jail cell:
Bill Cosby spent his first night in prison alone, in a single cell near the infirmary, as he began his three-to-10-year sentence for sexual assault. But if there's anybody on his side who's not happy with the arrangements, it's O.J. Simpson, who murdered his wife in the past and later served jail time for armed robbery:
Corrections officials announced Wednesday that Cosby -- now known as Inmate No. NN7687 -- will serve his sentence at SCI Phoenix, a new state prison about 20 miles from the gated estate where a jury concluded he drugged and molested a woman in 2004. The $400 million lockup opened two months ago and can hold 3,830 inmates.
O.J. Simpson, the former NFL player, said he is concerned that Bill Cosby will be attacked in prison, saying that the elderly Cosby should serve time under house arrest.Well isn't it the same with murderers? Simpson murdered his wife, Nicole Brown, and a new boyfriend of hers, yet he defends this other monster, whom he had once associated with in the past. Simpson is still shameful.
Simpson spent nine years in prison in Nevada for armed robbery and kidnapping. He said that convicted sex offenders such as Cosby, 81, will not do well in prison, TMZ reported.
“The problem is the nature of the crime,” he told TMZ. “Rapists are frowned upon in prison.”
And Cosby's lawyer delivered one of the worst statements on the trial:
Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt also told AP after the comedian’s sentencing that Cosby was “one of the greatest civil rights leaders in the United States for over the past 50 years,” while decrying the trial as the “most sexist and racist” in the country’s history.Oh, do keep going please. Just another "it's everyone else's fault but his" whine. And why do men/boys matter but not women/girls? Cosby was little more than a great deceiver, and now, it finally came back to haunt him. But, it's sad he couldn't be given a harder sentence than what he got.
“This has been the most racist and sexist trial in the history of the United States. Dr. Cosby has been one of the greatest civil rights leaders in the United States over the last 50 years. He has also been one of the greatest educators of men and boys over the last 50 years. This is not pointed out to the jury or allowed in court because the racist and sexist mass media was attacking and denouncing Dr. Cosby whenever his lawyers even hinted there was racist and sexism present,” said Wyatt, CBS Philadelphia reported.
