Concern raised by Israeli government members over possibility of political murder occurring
Government minister and MK Avi Dichter was struck in the head by a flag-wielding protester Thursday morning as he walked to his car, surrounded by security personnel.Following this, another minister made a vital point:
Dichter continued walking and entered the vehicle without further incident — but the attack on a government minister and former head of the Shin Bet by the anarchists was shocking to many.
Israel Police arrested the attacker — a woman — shortly after.
“I strongly condemn the attack on Minister Avi Dichter by a left-wing activist and demand that the leaders of the opposition immediately stop the anarchy, violence and incitement towards elected officials,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a fierce statement.
“I demand that the police and the prosecutor’s office take immediate and firm action against anyone who lays hands on elected officials, before it is too late,” he said.
Minister Ophir Akunis (Likud) added, "I warned over a month ago that this could end with political murder. It's closer than ever before. The silence of the leaders of the opposition and the left-wing is dangerous; it gives a green light to the violence of left-wing protesters to plunge Israel into anarchy."Exactly. With the worst part being that's exactly what they - and anti-Israelists outside the country - want. The police should not be allowing these demonstrations if that's all they're going to amount to.
Sara Netanyahu's also condemned the incidents:
Sara Netanyahu called on the leaders of the opposition parties to denounce the violence against government ministers, especially the attack on Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter earlier on Thursday. This certainly is illuminating as to where leftists in this country are going now. It's an utter embarrassment, and is only causing severe damage even to leftists themselves. The left-wing opposition in the Knesset doesn't belong there and should be voted out.
She added that opposition leaders had not condemned the protesters who had besieged her in a hair salon in Tel Aviv a few weeks ago.
"In recent weeks, threats have been heard and published to assassinate the Prime Minister, myself and our sons, government ministers such as Yariv Levin and Itamar Ben-Gvir, and other public representatives. I strongly condemn these incitement and violent attacks, which have no place among us," she added.
