Malka Leifer convicted on 18 counts of sexual abuse

The Australian court overseeing the trial of Haredi child molestor Malka Leifer has delivered their jurors' verdict, and they've thankfully found her guilty:
The former principal of a Jewish girls school in Australia was found guilty Monday of sexually abusing two students. Malka Leifer, 56, a Tel Aviv-born mother of eight, was convicted on 18 counts and acquitted of nine other charges, including five that related to a third student. The three former students are all sisters.

Leifer sat with her head tilted, watching the jury, and did not react as the verdicts were read. The two former students she was convicted of abusing were in court for the verdicts. Leifer had earlier pleaded not guilty to all 27 counts.
I've noticed at least a few cases where Haredi offenders vehemently refuse to admit guilt on anything when it comes to the subject of child abuse and rape. Clearly, they have some of the worst entitled mindsets around.
Prosecutors claimed Leifer had abused the students between 2003 and 2007 at the Adass Israel School, an ultra-Orthodox school in Melbourne where she was head of religion and later principal, as well as at her Melbourne home and at rural school camps.

[...] The sisters had an isolated upbringing in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and received no sexual education, the court heard. They were around 12, 14, and 16 when Leifer arrived at the school from Israel in 2001.

Lewis said the sisters had provided explicit evidence that they did not understand the sexual nature of what Leifer did to them. Leifer allegedly abused the eldest sister while they shared a bed at a school camp as the middle sibling pretended to be asleep in the same room. Jurors were told the youngest sibling had walked into a room while Leifer was abusing the oldest sister.

"Mrs. Leifer was one of the most respected persons in the community. If Mrs. Leifer was doing something then it must be OK," the youngest sibling testified about her reaction to what she saw happening to her sister.

The middle sister told the jury she had tried to form a relationship with another teacher to ask about what Leifer was doing, but Leifer discouraged her. Leifer "told me it wasn't healthy for me to have a connection with another teacher, to have more than one mentor," the middle sister testified.
That was abominable too. One unfortunate shortcoming in the trial is that the jury didn't include accusations made by the 3rd sister in their verdict. It is lucky Leifer was convicted, but all the same, the 3rd sister does deserve proper justice too.

Another sad part of this is that the NSW police won't be charging any of the school officials who helped Leifer evade justice:
Police have closed their investigation into members of the Jewish ultra-Orthodox community who allegedly helped their former school principal and convicted sex abuser Malka Leifer to flee Australia and avoid justice for more than a decade.

Police confirmed to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald that they had looked at a number of people connected to the Adass Israel School in Elsternwick, but that the probe ended in 2018 because there was “insufficient evidence to proceed with any charges at this time”.

“Any new information received will be thoroughly assessed,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Advocates are angry about the closure of the probe, saying the lack of accountability is hurtful and infuriating, given the strong evidence already heard in court of the school board’s role in helping Leifer escape.

“Many people are going to be confused about the lack of accountability,”
said Manny Waks, an activist against child sexual abuse. “It’s more than disappointing, it’s infuriating, and it sends the wrong message. It doesn’t make any sense.” [...]

“This is a classic case where an example should be made of these leaders, as prosecuting them would both ensure some justice and act as a deterrent to others,” Waks said.

“Based on the findings from the civil judge trial [one of the sisters’ civil case against Leifer and the school in 2015], it was very clear there was significant evidence against the Adass leadership.” [...]

Court records from Erlich’s case provide insight into a series of tense board meetings held in March 2008, as allegations began to pile up.

The court heard allegations that the Adass school board was not only aware of eight separate allegations against Leifer, but assisted her to flee the jurisdiction before police could act to keep her in Australia. Further details of other allegations were not explored in the judgment.

The Adass community is a small, ultra-Orthodox group of families based in Elsternwick and Ripponlea, who have little contact with the wider Jewish and other communities. Their lives are governed by strict adherence to Jewish law.
That's what should be considered an insular cult. And no decent food catering business should be working with them anymore. Oh, and "Jewish law"? My foot.
Supreme Court Judge Jack Rush said in 2015 the school had not explained the urgency of Leifer’s departure in any satisfactory way.

“There is no more serious accusation levelled against the headmistress of a girls’ school than that such headmistress has abused the trust reposed in her by sexually abusing those in her charge,” he said.

“In such circumstances the alleged perpetrator should not be assisted to urgently flee the jurisdiction. The failure of the Board to report the allegations to police prior to arranging Leifer’s urgent departure is deplorable.”
The whole cult community should be condemned, just like their fellow cult, the Satmar. It's terrible the police aren't taking action against the school board themselves, but after the way the Israeli police and prosecution refused to indict LGBT activist Gal Uchovsky, nor took any proper action against Haredi offenders Chaim Walder and Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, who had similar accusations made against them, this doesn't surprise me too much either.
