The Trump administration has threatened to take action against the UK government of Keir Starmer if he censors Americans:

The Trump administration promised to “take action” if Americans’ speech is censored by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s crackdown on free speech.

In response to a question from The Federalist about the United Kingdom’s suppression of free speech, Trump said it was a “very important” issue that his administration is talking to the U.K. government about.

Trump said that he spoke to Starmer about his censorship regime during their visit, and that Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also brought up the concern.

Rubio said he has “real concern” with British conduct toward speech, particularly when it comes to censoring Americans.

“There’s real concern that American speech, which is online, could fall into the hands of the British or any country’s jurisdiction,” Rubio said. “What unites us with Europe … is these shared values, and one of them being free speech. And so, if Americans are threatened by it, we’re going to need to take action.”

[...] As The Federalist reported, the U.K. has gone after its own citizens for peacefully praying outside abortion clinics, and Scottish citizens were informed that prayer inside their own homes could be criminalized.

On the basis of its “hate speech” laws, the U.K. government has arrested, tried, and found guilty many of its citizens, often for having mainstream points of view on things like abortion or immigration.

A flaw in this article, however, is that it doesn't bring up the subject of Islam, one topic on which LGBT practitioners are likely not above in the UK. Was that omission deliberate?

All that aside, the Trump administration's doing the right thing to confront Starmer over this Orwellian conduct of his, but they should also demand he cease his persecution of local citizens too. If Trump does take action against the UK over an issue like this, it could win the confidence of Europeans. And that's an important item to consider.
