Those countries who oppose US recognition of Jerusalem at UN assembly will have their names taken, aid revoked
United States Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the US will be “taking names” of countries that support a draft resolution rejecting President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, set for a General Assembly vote Thursday.Already, Trump's threatened to cut aid to those who turn against the USA:
Turkey and Yemen requested the urgent meeting of the 193-nation forum on behalf of the Arab group of countries and the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after the US vetoed the measure in the Security Council. The two countries circulated a draft resolution that mirrors the vetoed measure, reaffirming that any decision on the status of Jerusalem has no legal effect and must be rescinded.
Egypt had put forward the draft, which was backed by all 14 other Security Council members in a vote on Monday. Like the Egyptian draft, the text before the assembly does not explicitly mention Trump’s decision but expresses “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.”
Haley reacted angrily to the move, tweeting, “On Thurs there’ll be a vote criticizing our choice. The US will be taking names.”
In a letter sent to several UN ambassadors, Haley warned that she would report back to Trump on the countries that supported the draft resolution.
“The president will be watching this vote carefully and has requested I report back on those countries who voted against us,” she wrote. “We will take note of each and every vote on this issue.”
President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that vote to pass a United Nations General Assembly resolution seeking to rescind his historic decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.Turkey, Yemen and Egypt should be the first to have their monetary aid cut off. It's time they start learning how to fend for themselves as well.
“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House, according to Reuters.
Update: well, it's taken place, and no surprise, at least 128 countries voted to condemn the USA for its courageous move:
The United Nations General Assembly voted by a wide margin Thursday to adopt an anti-Israel resolution, tacitly condemning America’s recent recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.Honestly, abstentation isn't enough. But at this point, what is clear is that the White House must remain true to their word, and start taking the necessary steps to revoke financial aid to all countries whose governments had the gall to do this. Nikki Haley's already had some very stern words in response to this offense:
During an emergency session of the General Assembly Thursday morning (New York time), the body voted 128 to 9 to adopt draft resolution A/ES-10/L22, rejecting President Trump’s recent declaration recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city and chiding Israel over illegal “actions in Occupied East Jerusalem”. An additional 35 nations abstained from the vote, while another 21 did not participate.
Thursday’s resolution, which was drafted by Turkey and Yemen’s UN delegations, states that “any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”
The resolution also called on the US not to establish its embassy or any other “diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem.”
The nine countries which voted against the resolution included the United States, Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo.
Australia, Mexico, Argentina, Benin, Canada, Poland, Croatia, South Sudan, Uganda, Romania, Rwanda, Malawi, Lesotho, Latvia, Hungary, Colombia, Jamaica, Fiji, and the Czech Republic were among those member states which abstained.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley tore into the U.N. General Assembly Thursday, threatening to pull U.S. funding from the international body in response to a resolution condemning President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. It's time to take all 3 off the list of countries getting any monetary aid, that's for sure. The governments employing these disgusting politicians, if anyone, are those who should be barred from receiving any aid until they're replaced. It goes without saying that, one day, they will owe a very serious apology for their reprehensible hostility while turning their backs on the real villains and issues.
“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation,” Haley said in remarks to the assembly in New York.
“We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world’s largest contribution to the United Nations and we will remember it when so many countries come calling on us, as they so often do, to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit,” she warned. [...]
While Haley has repeatedly pointed to bias at the U.N., the latest resolution from the GA is different in that it directly singles out the U.S. for a decision in line with long-standing U.S. policy, and it seeks to shame the U.S. Haley has frequently contrasted the treatment of the U.S. and Israel with countries that have appalling human rights records like Cuba, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia – all three of which remain on the Human Rights Council.
Update 2: even some politicians on the left in Israel have come out against the UN's direction.
