Harvey Weinstein's studio is going to file for bankruptcy
The Weinstein Co.’s board of directors says the company is expected to file for bankruptcy protection after last-ditch talks to sell its assets collapsed.Something tells me most investors probably wouldn't want to buy the studio anyway, if the money went to Weinstein's legal funding. And one of the reasons the company's gone down so quickly is because they lost only so many business partners and investors after the scandal broke.
Now-disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein co-founded the company in 2005. He was fired last October after being accused of sexual assault and harassment by dozens of women. Weinstein Co. has been searching for a financial savior ever since. Weinstein has denied all allegations.
The Los Angeles Times reports the board said Sunday night it has no choice but to pursue bankruptcy.
Of course, this still leaves the question of how the victims will be able to sue the studio's executives for failing to stop Weinstein making their lives miserable. I'm sure there's legal stipulations that can help them in their efforts to keep the lawsuits going, including citation of the offending employees who did nothing to stop the disgusting scumbag, and that's why the legal teams representing them should start posting motions to ensure the lawsuits can still be worked out.
This is definitely bound to go down in history as a prime example of a movie business crashing down because its founder engaged in evil. And now, Weinstein's hopefully going to pay heavy prices for his past deeds.
Update: now it looks like the studio assets are going to be sold after all, to a former Obama administration official. At least it'll probably help the victims receive compensation.
