Bennett fails to make an impact at the UN
The greatest grace that can be afforded to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is to refuse outright to respond to his pleas to be compared to his predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu. When, on the eve of his journey to New York to address the UN General Assembly, he insisted on informing us with scornful contempt that, unlike the former premier, he would not require the assistance of visual aids, he was in fact forcing us to perform a comparative analysis of two speeches and two speakers. The worst part was when Bennett used the word "woke" in his speech, in a sense he apparently thinks it's tasteful, when it just amounts to politically correct disgust. If his advisors told him he should use that, they're just as irresponsible, and it failed to make an impression anyway.
This is an ongoing trend in Bennett's media and rhetorical conduct. He is determined to turn lemons into lemonade; In other words, to present his lack of charisma as the mark of a new kind of quality leadership. He seemingly forgoes any attempt to be as original and dominant as Netanyahu. From now on, these qualities are to be seen as negative, an expression of narcissism covering for failure. Bennett is a new kind of leader: quiet, minor, and one who acts without saying much.
Amnon Lord offered more thoughts:
There was an awkward tone to Bennett's remarks and it sounded like he was being defensive while on the most important stage in the world, talking about him and his friends who are going out to fight. "Do not judge them," he said of an issue that is far too complex for any audience; "it's the political polarization." A global plague, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic. That's the worst takeaway of this latest embarrassment, which is only bound to be followed by more. He's only giving the Iranian regime satisfaction this is nothing more than a terrible leader speaking.
It is very possible that at this point various listeners, especially in Tehran and Washington, breathed a sigh of relief. Something along the lines of, he's not speaking to us, he's justifying his political moves with convoluted explanations about social media. Tehran knows it won't have to sleep tonight with one eye open. In fact, the ayatollahs have been sleeping soundly for months.
