Sorry, Frist and Hastert, that's not how to do it
Caving to potential threats of violence, certainly to demonstrations that include people who do not have the citizenship to make said demonstrations valid, is not going to help Bill Frist and Dennis Hastert. Let's see what's said here:
The AP's bias begins to show here:
Tony Blankley says its not too late for the GOP to save itself from possible defeat. But that's why they're going to have to start showing that they can work 24 hours a day to draft and pass convincing bills, and if they're smart, they won't drop the one that makes illegal immigration a felony. Otherwise, how will the invaders learn?
In related news, a Detroit meat packing plant fired 15 workers for attending a demonstration. They've had to deal with protests though. One of the employees at the plant told Debbie Schlussel that the workers were documented, but, like Debbie, I guess it's up to the reader to decide what to make of this.
WASHINGTON - The two top Republicans in Congress, confronted with internal party divisions as well as large public demonstrations, said Tuesday they intend to pass immigration legislation that does not subject illegal immigrants to prosecution as felons.Ummm, can we be a bit clearer on what will be done, gentlemen? A solid bill is what's needed, especially if you want the Republicans to continue to hold onto the House.
A written statement by House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, did not say whether they would seek legislation subjecting illegal immigrants to misdemeanor prosecution or possibly a civil penalty such as a fine.
"It remains our intent to produce a strong border security bill that will not make unlawful presence in the United States a felony," the two men said. An estimated 11 million men, women and children are in the United States illegally.
The AP's bias begins to show here:
The late-afternoon statement by the top GOP leaders in both houses came after days of large street demonstrations by protesters opposed to criminal penalties for illegal immigrants. After some of the illegals committed acts of violence against counter-demonstrators, I find that a bit hard to believe. What's Neal Boortz got to say?
Additionally, in a Washington Post-ABC News poll published during the day, only 20 percent of those questioned said they favored declaring illegal immigrants to be felons and barring them from work. More than 60 percent indicated support for the general approach envisioned in the leading Senate proposal. It includes a requirement that illegal immigrants be required to pay a fine and back taxes as part of a process of qualifying for eventual citizenship.
Proving that they have further lost the pulse of the American people, Republican leaders in Congress are still screwing up legislation to deal with the problem of illegal immigration. First, let's start with what the American people want. Poll after poll tells us the following:But you see, that's exactly why the whole argument's been building up considerably this past month.
1. The American people, by a wide margin, believe that illegal immigration is a problem. They want the borders to be secure. What does that mean? Build a wall, hire more border patrol agents...whatever has to be done.
2. People would like to see the current crop of 12 million illegals or so sent home. Perhaps not all of them could be deported, but some would be a start.
3. By any measure, Americans oppose amnesty of any sort, including the guest worker programs being pushed by the administration.
The desires of the general public are pretty clear. They're tired of illegal aliens breaking our laws. They're tired of the Mexican invasion from our southern border. So what would you call someone who breaks our laws and sneaks into the United States? Well, don't call them felons...because Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert don't want you to.
The House passed a bill last year that makes illegals subject to felony prosecution. That's because it's against the law to come into this country unlawfully. But you see, such a measure isn't good for any Hispanic votes. So along comes Bill Frist and the Speaker to tweak things a bit...and do a little Hispandering.
This once again proves that neither party in Congress ever intends to do anything about illegal immigration. It's all just lip service.
