Illinois will divest from Ben & Jerry's, but it doesn't excuse their disastrous policies on public safety
The state of Illinois is expected to divest its pension funds of investments in Unilever this coming Wednesday, JNS has learned. While this is a positive development in itself, it doesn't excuse how disastrous Illinois law enforcement - definitely in Chicago - has become over the past number of years, and Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot's made no serious effort to improve the situation. Violent crime has been soaring there, and looks to continue being horrific this coming year as well. Avoiding investment in a company that's lenient on terrorism is good in itself, but still doesn't excuse how bad Illinois is doing on their own turf when it comes to crimes around the state and cities.
This looming decision in Illinois marks the latest domino to fall as the global conglomerate continues to come under fire after ice-cream maker Ben & Jerry's, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Unilever, publicly announced in July that it intended to cease distributing its products in areas it deemed "occupied Palestinian territory."
The Illinois Investment Policy Board (IIPB) is scheduled to vote on the matter at its regular meeting on Wednesday morning in Chicago. Multiple sources told JNS that a majority vote to divest is assured, barring a change in Unilever's posture.
