Former Law & Order cast member accused of sexual assault
Chris Noth was dropped by his talent agency on Friday after three women came forward with sexual assault claims against the actor.Yikes. This gives his creepy performance in the 1990-2010 flagship L&O series a whole new meaning. Like, what if he was conveying what he was really like through phony art? I vaguely remember an episode from the early years where, as Mike Logan, he was warning a woman about the legal action he could take against her in a case, pointing his finger at her while doing it, and the expression on his face was repellently nasty and disgusting, as was the vicious tone of his dialect. He may have been playing "tough cop", but it doesn't prove he wasn't shoving his real life mentalities into the mess. After this alarming scandal, you could wonder if it implies something else from a real-life perspective.
A representative for A3 Artists Agency confirmed to Insider that it parted ways with the "Sex and the City" star. "I can confirm that Chris Noth is no longer a client," the representative said via email. [...]
The news comes after a third woman accused Noth of sexually assaulting her in 2010 when she was 18 years old, according to The Daily Beast. [...]
On Thursday The Hollywood Reporter published a report in which two women accused the actor of sexual assault.
I also vaguely remember another story where Noth's character was implied to have an anti-Jewish bias (he blamed Jews for crack epidemics in New York). During the mid-2000s, when Noth was starring in L&O: Criminal Intent, they filmed an episode with alarming hostility to Israel, where his character took a position hostile to Israel full force. Here's some of the money quotes:
LOGAN: Are you afraid that Israel’s gonna look worse than it already does? We’ve been ordered off. By who? The Feds? Or Israel? Let me ask you something. On this one, are you a Jew first and a cop second? Is that the story?Okay, case closed. Read the whole teleplay transcript to see just how atrocious this all is. If Noth had no issue with making this part and parcel of his character onscreen, he is one really screwed up creep, and proves antisemitism and misogyny truly do go hand in glove.
ROSS: We’re done here, Logan. There are good guys, and there are bad guys here. We’re dealing with car bombs, terrorists. Hamas, PLO—they blow people up in cafes, busses, shopping malls.
LOGAN: Who are you kidding? You think Sarah Myers is the first innocent the Israelis have killed?
ROSS: Thank you for your help, detectives. We’re off this case.
In the mid-1990s, he was accused of assaulting black supermodel Beverly Johnson, who filed legal documents against him:
Chris Noth's supermodel ex-girlfriend Beverly Johnson accused him of 'beating her', 'making death threats' against her, and 'threatening to disfigure her' in 1995 court documents, a resurfaced newspaper article has revealed. And regrettably, he's never been in prison on an official sentencing to date. It's high time somebody worked on drafing a legal case against him to ensure he'll pay a price for his serious offenses of the past.
The article - which was originally published in The National Enquirer - was posted on Instagram account Diet Prada after the Sex and the City star, now 67, was accused of rape and sexual assault by two women in a bombshell report in The Hollywood Reporter.
According to the article, Johnson, now 69, alleged that Noth - whom she dated between 1990 and 1995 - 'beat her' during their relationship, and that he also made death threats against her while phoning her 'up to 25 times a day', threatened to disfigure her, and even 'vowed to kill her dog'.
The publication reported at the time that 'Beverly told a pal': 'I've never been so frightened in my life. I just can't believe that someone who had once been so tender and sweet could turn into this raging wild man.'
Johnson also reportedly tried to get a restraining order against Noth, who was starring in the role of Detective Mike Logan on popular crime show Law & Order at the time - and strongly denied the accusations made against him by the model.
No criminal charges were ever filed against Noth - who has vehemently denied the new accusations that he raped two women in 2004 and 2015, respectively. The Sex and the City star did however admit to having 'consensual encounters' with both women in a statement given to THR.
Johnson's allegations were brought back to light just hours after THR published an article in which two women - using the pseudonyms Zoe, now 40, and Lily, now 31 - claimed that Noth had raped and sexually assaulted them in 2004 and 2015, respectively.
The article quotes several 'insiders' who alleged that Noth 'exhibited a vicious streak' during his relationship with Johnson, with one source telling the publication: 'Christopher was jealous if Beverly spoke to another man.
'He would fly into rages and accuse her of flirting. Eventually, the verbal assaults turned to physical abuse.'
That same source pointed to one alleged incident in 1991, when they claim Noth 'hit [Johnson] in the face with his fist over and over' after they returned 'from a party in New York'.
'In 1991, on the way back from a party in New York, Christopher was seething,' the source claimed. 'As soon as they arrived home, Christopher started in with the accusations and snapped.
'He hit Beverly in the face with his fist over and over. Beverly fell to the floor crying, trying to crawl away.'
The National Enquirer source claimed that Noth then 'came to his senses, apologized and assured her he'd never touch [Johnson] in anger again'.
However the publication reported that the 'beatings continued', according to 'friends of the model', who allegedly broke up with the actor in February 1993 as a result of his behavior - although the two continued to publicly date until 1995.
The article then claims that Noth began 'calling [Johnson] up to 25 times a day threatening to kill her or disfigure her', with one source alleging that Johnson told them Noth 'even threatened to kill her dog, Flame'.
That same source further alleged that Noth 'broke into [Johnson's] California home and beat her' on December 20, 1994, claiming that the model's mother was there at the time and called the police - who reportedly took the actor into custody.
Just a few weeks before this whole scandal, he'd been interviewed by the UK Guardian, where he said the following about his Mr. Big character:
Sex and the City 2 came out in 2010, meaning this is the first time we’ve seen Big post-Trump era, post-MeToo, and that alpha male Manhattan millionaire seems a little less aspirational these days, I say. “I never saw him as an alpha male, that’s so funny that you say that. But it’s true, I do get offers to play these power-broker types. I know how to put on a suit, but my wife put it perfectly when she said: ‘I don’t think people realise that you’re kind of schlubby,’” he cackles. [...]Aside from the depressing Trump-bashing allusion via the reporter, it's weird he should say he didn't see his character as an "alpha" male. Because in real life, he definitely wasn't. He most definitely wasn't a gentleman, that's for sure. Such a crock. His violent, perverse antics on the other side of the camera give the whole concept of alphas and even betas a very bad name. What do his female co-stars on these TV shows think of him now, one can only wonder? I don't know, but one more thing to ponder in this piece:
There is an irony that, as an adult, he ended up playing such male, ultra-masculine figures in Law & Order, Sex and the City and, later, as Peter Florrick, the shamed politician in The Good Wife. But Noth shrugs when I mention that show. “I don’t feel any connection to [it]. It’s odd, because I know it was well received. I have an emotional void about that part, I don’t know why,” he says.
...“I love Queen Latifah. I say this all the time to SJ: I’ve been riding on the coat-tails of female actors for a long time, and it’s carried me along,” he says. He's also been riding the misery of women behind the scenes, off camera. Exactly why any success he's had in acting was undeserved. A most disgusting man he is indeed. That he continued to get jobs in Hollywood for years after shows how hypocritical the industry can be as well, and even in the #MeToo era, it'd be ill-advised to think they actually changed, or that current shows of responsibility will last long.
And now, it looks like, following the fallout, Noth is additionally losing out on a deal to sell an alcohol brand he owns:
A proposed acquisition of Chris Noth’s tequila brand by a Nevada based beverages company has been dropped in light of sexual assault claims made against the Sex and the City star. [...]Even if I didn't have a huge aversion to whiskey and its vodka counterpart as I happen to have, I wouldn't pay a cent for his shoddy product. Now it looks like Noth's been so publicly shamed, he had to get the sales site taken down. I won't shed any tears for this disgraceful, sorry excuse for a man. Nor will I be sorry if this leads to a situation where L&O is seen less in reruns on TV. What's clear is that now, the shows he appeared in, along with some movies, will be seriously tainted by his past actions. Noth never deserved to be in showbusiness to begin with, and it's time he hung up his stupid filming outfits and retired.
Now, a deal between Noth’s tequila brand Ambhar and Entertainment Arts Research Inc (EARI) that was reportedly worth $12m (£9m) has been dropped following the allegations.
“At this point in time it doesn’t make sense for us to move forward with this deal in light of the claims, which must be taken with the utmost seriousness,” said Bernard Rubin, CEO of EARI, in a press release.
“That said, we continue to be on the lookout for spirits brands that fit EARI’s ethos of social responsibility.”
Currently, it appears that Ambhar’s website has been deactivated.
Update: more disaster for Noth's career, as he's now been fired from a role he had on the new, gender-swapped take on the Equalizer. And if his bank account goes bankrupt, that'll be well deserved too.
Update 2: the other stars of Sex & the City have issued a statement that they're saddened by the terrible news, and it appears Noth's family life is coming apart too.
Update 3: a woman who once worked on the SOTC set gave an account of her own experience with Noth, whose behavior behind the scenes, in her words, "was disgusting". And here's more in Us Weekly about the restraining order Johnson filed against Noth in 1995.
